Dear Poplar Tree Families,

This week has been a blast, filled with energy and excitement around our first ever House Color Morning Meetings!  These morning meetings are all about building community and boosting school spirit. It was fun to watch students from the different grades and classes interacting during the morning meeting greeting and being human protractors during our activity. This is all about celebrating our school community, learning from each other, and having fun along the way! Want to know more? Ask your child about their favorite moments from the House meetings. They'll surely have lots to share!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sue Andujar, Principal

💡Uniquely YOU Spotlight 💡

As we are helping ensure everyone at Poplar Tree has the opportunity to celebrate their uniqueness, we also want to highlight what makes our staff members unique! This week's spotlight is on two of our multi-age teachers - Ms. Venkatanarayanan and Ms. Bowen.

*

Think about it...what makes YOU Uniquely YOU!?    💻 Lightspeed Software 💻

As part of our commitment to creating a safe and focused learning environment for your children, we are excited to introduce a new tool that our 1st-6th grade teachers will utilize: Lightspeed Software.

Lightspeed Software is designed to empower both teachers and students in the digital learning landscape. One of its key features is the ability for teachers to actively monitor student activity on laptops from their computer screens, fostering an environment that encourages focus and on-task behavior while teachers work with students in small groups.

We understand the importance of balancing technology in education with maintaining a focused and secure learning environment. Lightspeed Software is designed with these considerations in mind, and it will contribute significantly to the overall success of our students.

We also want to inform you that students will only be monitored during school hours. The regular filters remain in place on school devices, but once they are home, teachers cannot monitor your students. As parents, we would like to encourage you to sign up for your own Lightspeed reports, which will allow you to see how your child is spending time on the computer during and after school hours.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to our technology specialist, Leslie Leisey at [email protected].

🍭 SCA Lolligrams! 🍭 The SCA Lolligram sales have ended!

Today was the last day to purchase Lolligrams. As a reminder, all filled out Lolligrams are due by Tuesday, February 6, in order to guarantee delivery on February 14. Completed Lolligram cards can be placed in Mrs. Sniffin's mailbox or the green bin outside of her room (203).

If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Sniffin at [email protected] Thank you!

Think about it...what makes YOU Uniquely YOU!?

Next week we will be having full house morning meetings. During this time all members of each house will be gathering in the morning to connect as an entire house! We will also review the ways in which we can be ethical and global citizens in the hallway and throughout our day! Ask your child if they have earned a pink or purple ticket this week!

On the day of their meeting, we would like each Poplar Tree panther to wear their house t-shirts!

See below for the date of each house's morning meeting!

  • Monday, January 29: GREEN House
  • Tuesday, January 30: RED House
  • Thursday, February 1: YELLOW House
  • Friday, February 2: BLUE House
It's time for another round of YOU-seum sign-ups!

Does your student have a cool collection, awesome art, terrific trophies, lotsa Lego builds, or anything else they’d love to share with the school? Introducing the YOU-seum! In line with our school motto this year, “Uniquely You,” the display cases next to the front office and at the top of the stairs are being dedicated to showcasing all the ways Poplar Tree Panthers are unique and special. Every two weeks, 3 students will be able to curate a collection of items they want to show off! Grown-ups can sign their student up for one slot on a first-come, first-served basis. Please do not sign up if your students has already been a curator this year. Students may also collaborate if they choose. New sign-ups will be released at the beginning of the fourth quarter so if your student didn’t get a space this time, there will be another opportunity later in the year. Click HERE to sign up!

According to the Department of Education, students with high Arts involvement score better on standardized tests. Art supplies are consumable, and a large expense not fully covered by school funds. A PTA grant helped buy clay, paint, wire, paper, & yarn for students’ artistic creations. Art Teacher, Andrea Williams, says thank you for supporting the Arts!

Lockdown Drill Information

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. We have a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan for our school that is reviewed and updated regularly. Our plan includes procedures on how to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Students and staff regularly practice these drills every school year. We also practice lockdown drills.

A new Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. We are required to practice lockdown drills two times a year. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training, they are instruction and classroom based.

We will conduct a lockdown drill at our school soon. Our pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students are exempt from mandatory participation in lockdown drills during the first 60 days of the school year. They will participate in our second and final drill later this school year.

Additional information on our lockdown drill program to include parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this content, you should discuss the value of these safety drills with your child.

Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe.

🗺️ Dual Language Immersion Program Registration
  • Registration for the countywide lottery for Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs will open on Monday, January 22. Current pre-K students may apply for the kindergarten immersion program, and current kindergarten students may apply for the first grade immersion programs for the 2024-25 school year. Programs are available in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish.
  • Parents/caregivers who are interested may want to attend an informational meeting. Meetings are held at the school site. Check the FCPS events calendar for the most current information. Meetings will begin on Tuesday, January 16.
  • A virtual meeting hosted by the World Languages Office will include general program information. Access to this virtual meeting will be made available on the FCPS events calendar and the Dual Language Immersion registration site on the day of the meeting.

Get more information on the immersion program webpage and registration page.

  💻 iReady Testing 💻

Our iReady assessments are also used to measure student progress in reading and mathematics skills. iReady assessments are delivered within the classroom instructional block. Our winter iReady assessments will be given before February 2, 2024. Your student’s teacher can share the specific dates scheduled for testing.
