2021 6th Grade Sexual Harassment Lesson Information and Opt-Out Form

Dear 6th Grade Parent/Guardian:

To build and maintain safe and supportive school environments, Fairfax County Public Schools has developed two lessons at the sixth-grade level to educate students on the topic of sexual harassment. These two lessons seek to provide students with the necessary information, resources, and strategies to help prevent occurrences of sexual harassment as well as outline the steps to take if they feel they or their peers are targets of these behaviors. In addition, the lessons share how schools support targeted students so that they can continue to focus on learning in an environment that feels comfortable and secure. The two lessons are taught by the school counselor as part of their counseling curriculum.  At Poplar Tree Elementary School, these lessons are scheduled to be taught to sixth graders beginning the week of November 1 and ending the week of December 6.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of these lessons. Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, non-punitive alternative instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choice. If you wish to opt your child out of the sexual harassment lessons, please return the form that will be sent in this Friday's folder to the school prior to October 29, 2021.

Your child will be included in the two sexual harassment lessons unless you request that he/she be opted out using the opt-out form or unless he/she has been opted out of school counseling services. You do not need to return the form to the school if you wish for your child to participate in the lessons. If you return the opt-out form and later decide you want your child to receive the lessons, you must notify the principal in writing.

Parents/guardians may view these two lessons prior to deciding whether to opt their child(ren) out. These lessons will be posted in the Poplar Tree Parents Course in Schoology in the 6th Grade Folder under the School Counseling Section. Please email the counselor with any follow up questions.

Sincerely, Sue Andujar Principal

❤️92% of our school population has already provided consent - THANK YOU! We really want  consent from 100% of our Poplar Tree families! 💻

You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: https://poplartreees.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources. After reviewing these resources, please complete 🔗 this form 🔗 to indicate whether or not your student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. Just a reminder that Wednesday is our virtual Back to School Night. Additional information is below. Next week we also begin the Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) in Grades 3-6.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

It was another great week, and it was wonderful to see many families at our Principal Q&A session and PTA meeting last night. We are incredibly grateful for our PTA board and all our parent volunteers.

This week also marks the 20th anniversary of September 11. Poplar Tree commemorated the 20th anniversary of September 11 with a moment of silence and connected this historic event in classroom lessons. The classroom lessons focused on gratitude for the first responders and their heroic efforts on that day. We honor all those who lost loved ones and those who served heroically.

Have a wonderful weekend!

  🤒24 Hour Rule 🤒

We know everyone is focused on COVID and there are still other illnesses circulating the community.

Please remember that your child should be fever free without fever reducing medication for 24 hours before they can return to school.  A fever is considered a temperature of 100.4 degrees or greater.

This 24 hour rule also applies to gastrointestinal viruses. Students should be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school.

Thanks for helping to keep our students and staff healthy!

🐾 COVID Notification Process 🐾

GovDelivery 1 month 2 weeks ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

As the number of cases increase around the county, we want to share some additional information about the COVID processes in place at PTES. Thank you for your help in keeping all of our students and staff safe at school.

Daily Health Screen Questionnaire

❗Keep your child home from school with any symptoms that are COVID-like.❗

The most important way you can help as a parent is to keep your child(ren) home if they present with any illness or symptoms that are associated with COVID, i.e., runny nose, coughing, headache, stomach ache, vomiting.

If you keep your child home, and they are feeling better the next day, then they do not need documentation from a medical provider to return.

If your child comes to school and presents with symptoms, they will be placed in the Care Room and will be sent home. Your child must then be seen by a medical provider in order to return to school.

Parents, caregivers or guardians are strongly encouraged to monitor their children for symptoms of infectious illness every day through a home-based symptom screening and students who are sick should not come to school. Please consider the questions in the Health Screening Questionnaire each morning before sending your child to school. If you answer “YES” to any of the questions, please keep your child home.

Keep your child home if you suspect your child may have come in contact with someone who has COVID.

Please be overly cautious and keep your child home if you are awaiting COVID test results.

Communicate quickly with us.

As soon as you have information that your child has COVID or likely has it, please let us know. We only reveal the name of a student to the health department. The sooner we have information, the sooner we can alert the health department to begin the contact tracing.

Send your child to school with a properly fitted mask.

Aligned with guidance provided by the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has established procedures for the use of face coverings/masks (cloth or disposable) for students, staff, and visitors designed to mitigate the spread of COVID. This document highlights the types of masks that are appropriate for students to wear to school.

What will happen if there is a student who tests positive for COVID in my child’s class?

If a student tests positive and was at school during the infectious period (within 48 hours of onset of symptoms), we will alert the entire school community. The school reviews seating assignments throughout the school day and identifies potential close contacts to the student who has tested positive for Covid-19.

If your child is considered a potential close contact, we will notify you immediately. If your child is currently at school, we will ask you to come pick your child up from school.

What determines if a student is a potential close contact to a known positive case?

The following are examples of individuals who would be considered a potential close contact:

  • Students wearing masks who were less than 3 feet from a student case for 15 minutes or more in a school day
  • Students not wearing masks who were 6 feet or less from a student case for 15 minutes or more in a school day
  • Students masked or unmasked who were within 6 feet or less of a staff case for 15 minutes or more in a school day
What happens if my child is determined to be a potential close contact by FCPS staff?

Out of an abundance of caution, any student who is identified as a potential close contact by FCPS staff will have to stay home from school until the Health Department completes its contact tracing and closes the investigation. We have been told that this could be up to 72 hours. While your child is at home, your child’s teachers will provide assignments for them to access. If your child does not have their computer at home, we will work with you to pick it up at school. Please note that FCPS staff can only identify potential close contacts; we are not identifying students who have to quarantine. Only the Health Department can determine if your child needs to quarantine through their contact tracing investigation.

Case Information

We cannot disclose details of the positive case to include the child's name,  grade, class or any additional information; or the staff member's name or assignment. The health department will contact you directly and will direct the appropriate students to quarantine. The school will notify the entire community when the contact tracing is complete. Once the Health Department has completed their investigation, we will also invite any student who was staying home per FCPS staff direction and who has not been required to quarantine per the Health Department to return to school.

If a student decides to only purchase one item then it is charged as an ala carte item.  If a student only wants milk, the student may purchase it for 60 cents.  You can add money to your child’s My School Bucks account for this.  Daily menus can be found on the FCPS Nutrislice website. Please reach out to our School Based Technology Specialist, Leslie Leisey (lfleisey@fcps.edu) or your child's teacher you have questions or concerns. THANK YOU!!!

  Little Free Library

The Poplar Tree Student Council Association (SCA) is thrilled to announce that our Little Free Library is now open for use! It is conveniently located in front of Poplar Tree in the bus loop. Using SCA funds raised over the years, we were able to create this library for the Poplar Tree community to enjoy and we are so excited to see it get used. Come by and peruse the titles and take a book to read or feel free to donate a book for others to enjoy. A special shout out and thank you to the Ngo family for building the structure and to the SCA representatives and officers who helped to paint it. We’d also like to recognize Ms. Short, our finance tech, for all she did to help coordinate the installation process. The library contains books that will interest all elementary ages. It’s pretty packed right now, but as you see it start to empty out, we would welcome donated books. We hope this addition to our Poplar Tree community will be used and loved by many for years to come!

Message from our School Counselors

Hello Parents and Caregivers!

We are excited to welcome your children back to school. We also understand that the challenges of the past year may cause you or your child to worry about the return to school. Here are some proactive steps recommended by The Childmind Institute to help your children manage these feelings and prepare for the transition back:

  • Validate how your child is feeling.
    • “You feel worried about returning to school. Let’s list/talk about your worries.”
  • Model calm and positive thinking.
    • Help your child practice identifying the positive aspects of returning to school. “Let’s talk about what good things will happen at school. Let’s list those, too.”
    • Emphasize how safety measures like mask wearing and hand washing will help keep them safe.
  • If separation is a worry, practice separating and develop a ‘goodbye routine’ to ease the transition.

For more details about these ideas, check out the article “Back to School Anxiety During Covid.”

Local psychologist Dr. Alfiee Breland-Noble also recommends modeling calm. She encourages parents to be open and honest and to respond to children with age-appropriate answers. For more ideas and specific recommendations depending on your children’s age and grade (i.e. how to help students transition to middle or high school), check out this article: “How You can Help your Children Prepare to Go Back to School.”

If you have any concerns about your child’s transition back to school, we are here to help. Feel free to contact us at the email/phone number listed below.

Dear Poplar Tree Elementary Families,

Poplar Tree Elementary’s PTA supports critical academic needs, is an active voice on decisions that impact your child’s health, safety, and quality of education, and builds a stronger, more inclusive school community. We invite you to join and PTA For Your Child because increasing our membership, even by one, makes it possible to support the following things that fall outside of the school budget:

  • School music and art programs and technology resources such as Pear Deck, Reading A to Z, and Book Creator
  • Stipends for teacher supplies and teacher appreciation events
  • New cafeteria tables, playground maintenance and installation of the Little Library
  • Family spirit nights and parent access to a mobile app directory to connect with other families

There is no wrong or right way to be involved – anything you can give, whether it’s time or money, will support your child’s potential. We invite you to join the PTA because we can do more together than apart. Membership is $20 for up to 2 parents.

To access the new Poplar Tree PTA AtoZ Connect site and join the PTA, you will visit https://poplartreepta.membershiptoolkit.com/.

Even though you might have an AtoZ account from last year, this year you will need to create a new account because it's on a new platform.

We invite you to view open volunteer opportunities to help us make this an amazing year for our students and PTES teachers and staff!

We are also excited to share with you the 2021-22 School year PTES Spirit Wear!

View the options and place your order online at: https://ptes21.itemorder.com

The ordering deadline is August 30th.

This activity is sponsored by the Poplar Tree Elementary PTA and is operated independently of the Fairfax County School Board, Superintendent and Poplar Tree Elementary.
