Dear Poplar Tree Families,

I hope everyone is healthy and safe! As many of you heard yesterday, Ms. Walker was announced as the new Principal of Floris Elementary School. I will truly miss working with Ms. Walker on a daily basis. Many times it felt like we were using one brain! The Floris community is lucky to have a leader like Ms. Walker, and I am excited for her as she embarks on this new professional journey!

Now, onto distance learning. Below is the general Poplar Tree distance learning schedule. Classroom teachers and/or grade level teams will be sharing their personalized schedules directly with families. I have been so proud of our PTES staff! They have been working hard and losing sleep at night on figuring out creative ways to connect with their students. The staff has also participated in numerous virtual trainings throughout the week. As we embark on this new reality for all of us, we all need to continue to give everyone some grace. During our virtual staff meeting on Monday, we reminded each other that parents are balancing many things at home and some of our students might have difficulty accessing all of the virtual instruction. In turn, I ask our families to remember that our PTES staff are also balancing many things at home. Many of our staff are supporting their own children, caring for elderly parents, and dealing with WIFI challenges due to all family members working in the home. Distance learning is not going to look like a regular school day, and I know that our staff is committed to providing some fun and engaging learning opportunities for our students. As you look at the schedule below, please know that all teachers will be recording their “live” instructional lessons and then will post those recordings.

We are all excited to begin this new learning experience together with you and to “get back to school.” Distance learning will not be perfect, and I am sure that we will all make some mistakes and need to adjust some things along the way. We are all in this together, and remember Amazing Things Happen Everywhere!

Stay safe and healthy!

Ms. Andujar

What are Virtual Office Hours?

Virtual office hours are a time when you can sign on to Blackboard Collaborate or email with your teacher to ask them questions regarding your assignments.

As part of the Distance Learning Plan, FCPS is sending weekly learning packets in the mail for all students PK-8. Some families would prefer not to receive paper copies in the mail and want to just access the packets on Blackboard 24/7 Learning. If you want to opt-out of receiving paper packets, please go to this link and complete the information required to opt-out. You can find further information on the packets here

Poplar Tree Families and Students.

These are truly unprecedented times and I am so sorry that I am not able to say goodbye in person.

As you may or may not have heard, I have been named the new principal of Floris Elementary School. I am so excited to enter the next chapter of my story as the Principal of Floris, and it is also difficult to leave the amazing staff, awesome students and outstanding families here at Poplar Tree.

Please know that Poplar Tree will always hold a special place in my heart. I feel very blessed to have been the Assistant Principal at Poplar Tree for these last years and am so proud to have worked with the Poplar Tree staff and community to allow our students to achieve and succeed in so many ways.

As a principal, I will take with me all the moments that have helped me grow from the amazing work we do together at Poplar Tree.  To quote Walt Disney, "It's not the days in life we remember, rather the moments."

My time at Poplar Tree has left an impression on me and is a chapter in my story that has touched me deeply. Amazing Things Happen at Poplar Tree and I know they will continue to happen in the future.

Poplar Tree Student Essential Instructional Items

GovDelivery 1 week 1 day ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Poplar Tree Families,

Good afternoon! As we shared in the Paw Print earlier, our staff has been thinking about all of you and we miss you! We encourage you to continue to implement safe social/physical distancing practices.

As we prepare for Distance Learning to begin on April 14, we need some information from parents.

Grade K-2 Parents:  Please complete this form and indicate if you have a device at home that your child can use (laptop, desktop, iPad, etc.) to assist teachers in planning for instruction.  FCPS is not providing devices for K-2 students at this time.

Grades 3-6 Parents: Please complete this form if your child left an essential item (Grades 3-6 laptop or charger or Grades 4-6 strings or band instrument) at Poplar Tree that he/she needs to continue their distance learning. A Poplar Tree staff member will contact you to arrange a time for you to pick up the essential items listed above. The pickup times will be on Tuesday, March 31.

We are taking the health of our families and staff very seriously and following CDC guidelines which include social/physical distancing and no gatherings greater than 10. We are emphasizing that the only family members permitted at the building to pick up an instrument or laptop will be by appointment only.  Pick up for other personal items will be for another time.  Thank you for understanding.

Students and families are in our thoughts at this time.  Be sure to take care of yourself, your family and focus on health and safety.

Paw Print News and Updates 3/20/20

GovDelivery 2 weeks 1 day ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Dear Families,

We hope everyone is staying safe and healthy! Things have certainly changed rapidly since our last Panther Paw Print, and things will most likely continue to change over the next few weeks. Please know that there are many things happening behind the scenes to ensure that we can stay connected with our students and families. We know some teachers are already reaching out to students. Remember, these interactions are really to keep relationships going. Teachers cannot assign mandatory work or grade anything. We are taking our direction from FCPS and need to be consistent across the board to ensure equity for all students.

The most important thing right now is for everyone to take care of themselves and practice social (physical) distancing. We miss seeing our students, staff, and families daily. Although, we have gotten creative with some virtual meetings with our staff. We have included Dr. Brabrand’s message below that was sent yesterday.

Stay tuned for additional information next week.

We hope to see you soon! Remember, we are all in this together.

Ms. Andujar and Ms. Walker

Dr. Brabrand's Message from 3/19/20:

Dear Families and Staff,

I hope you and your students are doing well and staying healthy.   This is an extraordinary time for our community, state and nation.   While we have no way to predict how the days ahead will unfold, we strongly encourage you to follow the guidance we are receiving each day from the health professionals to contain the spread of the virus.  We all want to be responsible global citizens – FCPS employees and families alike – and do our part to stop the spread.

We understand the anxiety and challenges that COVID-19 is placing on families.  We also know our families are concerned about instruction and learning for our students.  Please know our teachers care and want to support their students.

Behind the scenes, we’ve been working hard to plan for the days and weeks ahead as we prepare for the possibility of distance learning. I will be providing you additional details early next week about our distance learning plan and other instructional updates.

If FCPS schools cannot reopen as scheduled on April 14, our plan is to begin distance learning either online, or by learning packets at that time. Over the next two weeks, we will begin distance learning training for teachers and give teachers the opportunity to plan and prepare for distance instruction and reconnect with their students.

We will also be working with individual schools to distribute laptops and MiFi devices by appointment beginning next week to students who do not have access at home.    We will also provide for an essential/critical items pickup at individual schools.  More details will follow.

We know there are questions about third quarter grading. We are working with our principals to develop a plan for grading and will communicate that information to you as soon as we can.

Virginia schools are closed by order of the Governor's office. The guidance provided by the Virginia Department of Education is that since school divisions cannot ensure equity in access, student instructional assignments should not be required or graded during the closure.

Please continue to take advantage of the continuity of learning resources:

  • When anyone logs on to FCPS 24-7 they will see a Continuity of Learning module that has links to resources for elementary students as well as resources for middle and high school students.
  • Continuity of learning resources are also available at this link along with information about accessing our instructional videos.

We are continuing our food distribution for our families which is a critical function we can provide at this time.  Today, we began bus delivery of meals in some areas.  Please continue to check our website daily for food distribution locations.

Listening to your concerns is important to me and so I invite you to join me tomorrow, March 20, for a Facebook Live Chat beginning at 3 p.m. to answer questions regarding FCPS operations during the COVID emergency. https://www.facebook.com/fcpsva

Stay connected to the latest C-19 information through the FCPS website and the Fairfax County website.  Please stay safe and look for my next message early next week.

Sincerely,

Scott Brabrand, Superintendent Fairfax County Public Schools

Poplar Tree Families,

The information below was sent to all FCPS families and staff from the superintendent. All FCPS schools and administrative offices are closed. The update we sent earlier today with directions for tomorrow's laptop distribution will no longer happen tomorrow. Poplar Tree Elementary School and the main office will be closed until further notice.

FCPS will continue to update everyone as information becomes available.

Dear FCPS Families and Staff,

COVID-19 continues to be a fast-moving event.  This weekend, we have been continuing to evaluate our options going forward with the health and well-being of our students, employees, and community remaining the top priority.   In consideration of these developments, FCPS is announcing the following actions:

  • All FCPS school buildings are closed until further notice.  Food distribution at FCPS sites will continue as scheduled.  More details about the food program are below.
  • With the school buildings closed, the laptop distribution scheduled for tomorrow is postponed.
  • All FCPS administrative offices are closed until further notice.
  • Only essential personnel as defined by FCPS program managers and supervisors will be asked to report to work until further notice.  All other employees will work remotely.  It is expected that all FCPS personnel reporting to work will practice social distancing to the greatest extent possible.

Beginning tomorrow, March 16, we are expanding the grab and go food distribution sites to a total of 18 locations.  The food distribution is set up outside the schools.   Breakfast will be served from 8-10:30 a.m. and lunch from 10:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the locations listed below:

Annandale Terrace ES,  7604 Herald St., Annandale
Bailey's Primary ES, 6111 Knollwood Dr., Falls Church

Mount Vernon Woods ES, 4015 Fielding St., Alexandria
Providence ES, 3616 Jermantown Rd., Fairfax
Weyanoke ES, 6520 Braddock Rd., Alexandria

We have also been flooded with generous offers from employees and community members to volunteer at our food distribution sites.  Due to state training requirements for food distribution, we are encouraging those interested in helping to contact one of our community partners.    These partners are in continuous support of our FCPS families and are connected with the larger effort of Fairfax County. Their contact information is available at this link:
https://www.fcps.edu/news/coronavirus-update-support

As explained in Friday's letter, we have made plans to provide continuity of learning during this break. Our goal is for students to continue to engage in learning activities.  The first two weeks of school closure (from Monday, March 16 to Friday, March 27) will not include any teacher-directed instruction.  Students can participate in optional, self-directed learning activities that have been posted on FCPS 24-7 Learning (Blackboard) and are available at www.fcps.edu.   Again, these activities are not required, nor graded.

We are all in this together.   We encourage you to practice social distancing and healthy habits.   Wash your hands frequently, cough into your sleeve, and if you feel sick – stay home.  Thank you for your continuing support and cooperation.

Sincerely,
Scott Brabrand, Superintendent
Fairfax County Public Schools

Dear Panther Families,

Spring weather sure arrived with the time change this week. The official first day of spring is next Thursday.  We really enjoyed seeing all of the acts at the Talent Show last Friday. The students, teachers and dads really rocked the talent.

We know many of our families are looking for updates and information about the cornoavirus, COVID-19. A variety of resources about coronavirus, including "Talking to Children about COVID-19," a handout about COVID-19 from the Fairfax County Health Department and updated FAQs have been posted here.

At Poplar Tree, we are following all Fairfax County Health Department guidelines and have been thoroughly deep cleaning classrooms and common spaces and providing time to wash hands, especially before eating.

Please watch for an additional News You Choose message with information regarding specific event cancellations at Poplar Tree.

This continues to be an evolving situation and FCPS is committed to keeping families updated. We know this is a time of uncertainty and we will get through this together.

Take care,

Dear Panther Families,

This was such a fun week focused on reading. Thank you Julie Majkowski for planning the week. Our Kindergarten and 1st grade students enjoyed having Stella Pekarsky, the Sully School Board Member read to them on Monday. Our second graders enjoyed having Mrs. McGrath, former PTES First Grade Teacher, reading to them as well.

We have had lots of warm weather this winter and no real impacts of snow and ice. Even the groundhog expected an early spring. One sign that spring is coming is Daylight Saving Time. Please remember that time springs forward one hour on Sunday morning at 2am. Turn your clocks ahead before you go to bed on Saturday!

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Paw Print week of March 2-6, 2020

GovDelivery 1 month ago

Dear Panther Families,

Weather is a part of many of our science curricula and is also an interesting subject to learn about at any age.  Our 2nd-6th grade classes had the opportunity to learn more about weather from WJLA Meteorologist Veronica Johnson on Wednesday morning when she visited Poplar Tree. The students were excited about the presentation and we wanted to say again: Thanks @ABC7News for the #StormWatch7 Lunchbox Visit on Wednesday.

Read Across America is celebrated next week in honor of Dr. Seuss. Please see below the creative ways we will be celebrating at Poplar Tree. Please take some time to read with your children in honor of Read Across America.

Please note that there is no school for students next Tuesday, March 3. The FCPS School Board made this a student holiday to accommodate the 2020 presidential primary. Since many FCPS schools are voting locations, including Poplar Tree, the school board made this a student holiday for student safety and to ensure ample parking for voters.

We hope you have an outstanding weekend!

Ms. Andujar and Ms. Walker
