Dear Poplar Tree Families,

It's hard to believe that next week is Thanksgiving! This year has certainly been an unusual one with numerous challenges, and yet there is still so much to be thankful for. We are thankful for our wonderful staff whose dedication to our students makes a difference each and every day. We are also thankful for our supportive parent community and outstanding students. In times of challenge it is important to look for the joy, and we have plenty to be joyful about!

For those of you that submitted a Panther Praise (see below), it meant a great deal to the staff member who received that Praise. What a great way to express how THANKFUL you are for a PTES staff member!

There will be no Paw Print next week due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Be on the lookout for the next Paw Print December 5.

Stay safe, healthy, and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

SCA Sponsored Food Drive December 2nd, 4th, 8th, and 10th

SCA will be running a food drive. Bins will be placed outside the school to collect food. Please see the flyer above with additional details.

Speech Screenings

Screening children in various areas has been an important responsibility of Virginia public schools for some time.   Speech, voice, and language are areas in which screenings are routinely conducted for students newly enrolled in Fairfax County Public Schools in grades K-3. These screenings are completed by the school speech-language pathologist and are done in collaboration with the classroom teacher.  As part of the Virginia child find initiative, the screenings help to identify students who may need consideration for a further evaluation or a referral to medical personnel.  Parents of children who do not pass the screening will be notified by the school speech-language pathologist.

Screenings are planned for both in person and virtual learners according to the following schedule:

Kindergarten, first, and second grader screenings will begin the week of December 1, 2020.  Screenings for newly enrolled 3rd graders are set to begin the week of January 4, 2021.

Poplar Tree School Picture Day

On Monday, December 14 our photography company, Lifetouch, will be at Poplar Tree taking student portraits. In order to keep everyone safe, pictures will be taken by appointment only. Only those families signed up will be able to have their child's picture taken on that day.

If you would like a picture taken of your child, please sign up here.

Poplar Tree Staff Panther Praise!

We are starting a new online tradition here at Poplar Tree that gives the community the opportunity to say thank you and/or show appreciation for all of the effort the Poplar Tree Staff is putting in day and night! We will share these praises with the staff members. To submit a Staff Panther Praise, please fill out this form!

Thank you for helping to recognize our amazing staff! Reminder: Referral Window for Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Level IV Screening Consideration Ends December 1

Tuesday, December 1 is the close of the window (Sept 8-Dec 1) for parents to submit a referral form for their student to be screened for full-time Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Level IV. The parent referral form, submitted to the school, is one pathway to have a student screened for AAP Level IV. Parents should not wait for an announcement of the second grade screening pool if they want to make sure their students is screened for AAP in the coming screening cycle. Parents of students in grades 2-7 will need to submit the referral form by December 1. Referrals will not be accepted after December 1. For more information about AAP Level IV or the screening process, please visit https://www.fcps.edu/academics/academic-overview/advanced-academic-programs.

PTA Snap! Raise fundraiser

GovDelivery 2 weeks ago

A Message from the PTA  Snap! Raise Fundraiser

  Hi parents and supporters!

As you are aware, the pandemic has presented challenges that we can only overcome if we face them together! As one effort to raise badly needed funds, we're kicking off a major Poplar Tree fundraiser with Snap! Raise this year!

Snap! Raise will be replacing the No Fuss Fundraiser. The reason for this change is that Snap! Raise is set up to allow families to invite others in their circles to donate. Rather than putting the responsibility squarely on the parents, this program allows us to cast a wider net and hopefully raise more money for the school! It is our hope that each student will have a major impact on our program.

Our goal is $30,000 and the funds raised will be used for Poplar Tree’s technology needs (laptops, software, etc.) and furnishings for the classrooms.

We are very excited to try out this new platform! Here is how it works:

STEP 1: We ask that you help your student/s identify people they will reach out to via Snap! Raise, and gather those email addresses so that they can pre-load them onto their accounts. The goal is for each student to reach out to 20 people, though they are encouraged to exceed that if they can! This is a very secure fundraiser that has privacy laws and practices put in place to make it extremely safe and easy to use.

The list of 20 people should include many of your child’s biggest fans and needs to be completed in full to ensure our campaign is set up for success. Please avoid using emails of teachers, peers of your student, or strangers.

STEP 2: Create your profile and add your child/children on Snap! Raise via this link: http://www.snap-raise.com/join_code/693982365 and load the list of contacts. Snap! Raise takes over from there and sends emails to your contacts, inviting them to donate to your child’s campaign.

  • If you have more than one student at Poplar Tree, you have the option of creating a profile for each of them (a separate email address is required for each profile), or you can just create one and have them share it by adding all of their names.
  • Be sure to personalize your page by adding a picture!

💡Here are 20 examples of people for your student to consider adding:

Parent(s)/Guardian #1

Parent(s)/Guardian #2

Grandma(s)

Grandpa(s)

Cousin(s) 15.

Uncle(s)

Aunt(s)

Family doctor

Orthodontist/dentist

Church/Social leader

Scout/troop leaders

Family friend #1

Family friend #1

Former coaches

School alumni

Local business that knows you

Neighbor(s)

Parent co-worker(s)

Friends of parents

Adult sibling(s)

INCENTIVES

👍Prizes will be awarded to:

The top four profiles who send the most emails

The top six profiles who raise the most money

❓If you have questions, please email Rachel Cabero at rachel.cabero@gmail.com.

The Fundraiser will start once enough email addresses have been loaded into individual accounts.

This event is sponsored by the PTA and is operated independently of the Fairfax County School Board, the Superintendent, and Poplar Tree ES.

A Message from Your School Counselors: Helping Your Child Transition Back To School

Your child may have “double-dip” feelings when they think about returning to school--excited to be back, but worried about re-entering the classroom.

Here are a few suggestions to help you help your child transition back to school:

  • Follow your child’s lead emotionally.
    • Try your best to separate your own worries from how your child is feeling.
  • If your child seems worried:
    • Reassure.  It’s okay to be worried, I’m here to help.
    • Ask what they are worried about, then respond factually to that specific worry.
  • Give information in “small bites” that are easy for your child to “digest.”
  • Frame safety precautions positively:
    • DO:  We stay 6 feet apart to keep your classmates and you safe.
    • DON”T:  If you get too close, you are going to get sick.
  • Limit media.
    • Ask yourself these two questions when deciding whether to turn on the TV: Is this giving me new information?  Is this helping me to be reassured?
    • Children absorb information even when we believe they are not listening.
  • Lastly, communicate hopefully and your child will be hopeful as well.

If you have specific worries about your child transitioning back to school, please contact us. We are here to help.

  PTES Celebrates our Veterans

Each year Poplar Tree celebrates our Veterans and we want to continue the tradition this year. While we will not be able to hold our in-person celebration, we will celebrate virtually!

📸 Photo Slideshow

To honor our students’ military family members who have been or who are currently deployed overseas or serving in the military, we will be putting together a photo slideshow. If you have someone in your family that you would like to be a part of this, please complete THIS FORM with the Veteran's information, student(s) information, and a photo. You will have to have a Google account to share your photo on this form, so if you do not have one, you can send the photo via email to Leslie Leisey at lfleisey@fcps.edu.

🗣️ Guest Speaker Videos

We usually have some wonderful guest speakers join us and the students love hearing about the experiences of our military family members! If you are currently serving or have served in the military, we would love to be inspired by you! If you would like to be a guest speaker, please create a video for us! To participate, please add your video to THIS FLIPGRID. The guest password is Veterans2021. Need help with any of this? Contact Leslie Leisey at lfleisey@fcps.edu.

👉 Please know that all of this will be shared in our classes on Veteran's Day, and also sent to the Poplar Tree community via a News You Choose Message that morning, so they will be available to the public.

We look forward to honoring all of our Veterans! Free Drive Thru Flu Clinic Flu Clinic sign up

Return to School Information Confirmation of Virtual or In-Person Choice

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is planning to bring additional student groups back to school for in-person instruction in the near future. We will follow strict safety and health protocols to minimize health risks for students and staff. To learn more, visit here.

The following groups of students will be returning to in-person instruction (start dates below are tentative and subject to change):

Group 5: Kindergarten

November 16 – tentative date

 Group 6: Grades 1-2

November 30 - tentative date

Group 7: Grades 3-6

January 4 – tentative date

Group 8: Grades 7-12

January 26– tentative date

We will be using concurrent instruction for students who receive in-person instruction. This means that students who elect in-person instruction will receive two days of teacher-led instruction in the school building and two days of teacher-led instruction at home. Students who elect all-virtual learning will continue to receive four days of teacher-led instruction at home.

In either format, Mondays will be a full day of independent learning for students to give our teachers more time to prepare and plan the week’s lessons. This will begin on Monday, November 9, 2020 for Group 5 and on November 16, 2020 for Group 6.  November 12 and 13 will be teacher workdays and independent learning days for Group 5 students to give our teachers time to prepare and plan for in-person instruction.  November 20, 23, and 24 will be teacher workdays and independent learning days for Group 6 students.

Some schools are already piloting concurrent instruction. The Superintendent will report his findings on the pilot program at the November 12 School Board work session.

Here is a video that demonstrates how a concurrent classroom will look.

We will honor the choice you made in the FCPS July survey to determine the setting for instruction. If you chose in-person instruction, we will assume your student(s) will return to in-person instruction in accordance with the schedule above. If you chose all-virtual instruction we will assume you will continue in that format. If your circumstances have changed, please contact us no later than Friday, October 30 at 703-633-7400 and we will try to accommodate your request based on the availability of staff and space.

We will strive to minimize the impact of this transition; however, some students may experience a change in schedule or class assignment as we work to accommodate everyone’s preferences.

Thank you for your support and cooperation as we continue on this journey to deliver the best instruction for all FCPS students.

Sincerely,

Sue Andujar, Principal

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

Happy Friday! We hope you had a great week. We enjoyed welcoming some of our preschool students back into the building this week. And, we look forward to the return of some of our students in the multi-aged classrooms next week. It was exciting to hear students laughing and engaging in learning in-person. And, we look forward to welcoming more students back into the building over the coming weeks.

We have stated many times this is an unusual school year and one in which we have needed to rethink almost everything that we do. One of our most treasured Poplar Tree traditions is the Veteran's Day celebration. We feel it is important to continue this tradition and to honor those that serve or have served in the military. Below you will find information about the celebration.

Stay safe, healthy, and have a wonderful weekend!
