Important Safety Reminders for Arrival and Dismissal As we return from winter break and are ending the first semester of school, we thought this was a good time for a safety reminder. Parents who drive their children to school are reminded to use the designated Kiss & Ride areas and to observe safety rules.     Please see the aerial map above indicating the designated Kiss and Ride location and buses only entrance.
  • The designated Kiss & Ride area is located in the parking lot. It is unsafe for the students to be dropped on Melville Lane.
  • Load and unload in the Kiss & Ride area only.
  • Pull forward as far as possible into the designated Kiss & Ride lane before loading or unloading.
  • In the Kiss & Ride line, stay in a single line.  IT IS UNSAFE TO PASS OTHER CARS!!
  • Children should enter and exit cars from the passenger side ONLY
  • Please refrain from using cell phones in Kiss & Ride.
  • When pulling into and out of Kiss and Ride, please be mindful of the speed in which you drive your car.
Thank you for your support in keeping our children safe!

Paw Print week of January 21-25, 2019

GovDelivery 5 days 19 hours ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Dear Panther Families,

We started the week with a Snow Day and it continued to be chilly this week. It is definitely winter and Mother Nature seems to be sending us plenty of wintry weather this year. A huge thank you to our custodial crew for all of their hard work clearing the snow. Our team is amazing!

Safety Drills continue in the new year. We completed our January lockdown drill this week.  Staff and students did an excellent job participating in this safety drill. There are still several safety drills upcoming this year: one more lockdown drill, monthly fire drills in February-June and the annual tornado drill in March.

Please remember that next week is a short week with no school for students on Monday and Friday. Monday is the Martin Luther King, Jr holiday and Friday is the Teacher Workday for the end of the 2nd quarter and 1st semester.

We hope you have a wonderful long weekend!

Ms. Andujar and Ms. Walker

Positivity Project  This week our focus has been on the character strength of hope.

Individuals with the character strength of hope are those who are future oriented. They have a positive vision of what the future holds and maintain confidence that they will get there. They keep a positive attitude despite setbacks – and often find ways to convert what seems like an obstacle into a stepping-stone to achieve their goals. They might be described as: positive, confident, encouraging, cheerful, heartening and inspiring.

To quote Emily Dickinson, “Hope is the thing with feathers / That perches in the soul / And sings the tune without words / And never stops at all.”

If you are interested in learning more about the Positivity Project,  please visit their website or the Poplar Tree website Positivity Project

Remember to Dress for Cold Days

It is the intention of the school to hold outdoor recess throughout the school year, unless there is precipitation falling, snow/ice on the ground, wind chill warnings or heat advisories. Please make sure your children come to school prepared to play outdoors with jackets, hats, and gloves.

During extreme inclement weather (rain, snow, ice, sleet, temperatures below freezing with a significant wind chill), Kiss-and-Ride students will wait in the cafeteria instead of at Kiss-and-Ride.

Menu Change for Wednesday, January 23

The menu choice on Wednesday is Chicken on a Biscuit. Due to the snow day on January 14, the cafeteria will be substituting hamburger buns for the biscuits.

Dear Panther Families,

Welcome back and welcome to 2019! What a great first week of the new year! Our teachers and students were back refreshed and ready for the new year. Classrooms were buzzing with great conversations, lessons and reviewing of expectations. Mother Nature even cooperated on Tuesday to allow us to do our January Fire Drill.

Just a reminder that Poplar Tree PTA is hosting our International Heritage Night tonight starting at 6pm. It should be a wonderful evening for all.

Under the upcoming dates section of this Paw Print, we have included links to the FCPS school year calendars for this school year and next school year. We know that some of you have already seen the calendars and wanted to have them easily available for your reference and planning.

We hope you have a great weekend!

Ms. Andujar and Ms. Walker

  Week at a Glance

Friday, January 18:

Three hour early release for K-6 and Head Start, No School for AM or PM preschool

Positivity Project  This week our focus has been on the character strength of perseverance.

Individuals with the character strength of perseverance are those who can spend long periods of time devoted to a single goal or set of goals. Those who persevere are able to set goals for themselves and then take active, calculated steps toward those goals. They might be described as: persistent, devoted, hardworking, gritty, committed or industrious.

To quote Martin Luther King, Jr “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”

FCPS Inclement Weather

Due to inclement weather or other emergency situations, it may be necessary to close schools for the entire day, to open schools two hours late, or to close two hours early. Parents are urged to make arrangements now for the care of their children when schedule changes are made (and to provide for the rare situation when it is necessary to close an individual school because of a power failure or other circumstances). Children should know where to go or what to do if a parent will not be or is not home.

Read more about Weather Cancellation Procedures.

Change to SACC’s Inclement Weather Policy

School-Age Child Care’s (SACC) inclement weather policy for days when FCPS announces a two-hour delayed opening has been revised. Effective January 7, 2019, on days when FCPS announces a two-hour delay, SACC centers will open at 8 a.m. (instead of 7 a.m.) for children enrolled in the before-school session. SACC's one-hour delayed opening will provide additional time for road conditions to improve and be adequately assessed, and for parking lots and sidewalks to be cleared as needed.

VDOE Student School Climate Survey Cancelled

Before the winter break, we notified you that your child would be taking a statewide Student School Climate Survey mandated by the Virginia Department of Education. This survey was scheduled to be conducted from Monday, January 14, 2019 to Friday, February 8, 2019.

Based on feedback from principals and school administrators, Dr. Brabrand, in collaboration and consultation with State Superintendent, Dr. Lane, has granted an exemption of the VDOE Student School Climate Survey for this year.

Therefore, the VDOE Student School Climate survey will not be administered.

VDOE Student School Climate Survey for students in grades 4, 5 and 6

GovDelivery 1 month 1 week ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

December 12, 2018

Dear Parent or Guardian,

This winter our school, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Education and the University of Virginia, is participating in a statewide student school climate survey. The purpose of this survey is to help schools assess their progress in establishing a positive school climate that promotes student learning.

I am writing to provide you with information on the student survey. The survey will be completed by 4th-6th grade students, online using computers at school. The survey does not ask for your child’s name and all answers are anonymous (no one will know how your child answered the survey). Parents will not have access to their child’s survey answers. There is a copy of the survey available at school for your review and is available online at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/support/school-climate/index.shtml.

The survey will ask questions such as how students feel about their school, how students get along with one another and their teachers, how students feel about school rules, their perceptions of their teachers’ willingness to help them, and how they feel about attending school. They will also be asked what kinds of bullying they may have observed at school and whether they have been bullied themselves.

The survey is voluntary and your child can decide not to participate. If you do not wish for your child to participate, please notify the school office by telephone or letter by January 9, 2019.

Your child will not receive any immediate benefit from participating in the survey, but the survey will help us to maintain a safe, inviting, and supportive learning environment for your child.

Thank you for your cooperation in this important study of school climate.

Sue Andujar

Principal

Individuals with the character strength of kindness are those who help others because it’s the right thing to do, not because they expect any reciprocal treatment or gain in reputation. They might be described as:  caring, thoughtful, considerate, selfless, compassionate and generous.

To quote Amelia Earhart, ““No kind action ever stops with itself. A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up to make new trees. The greatest work that kindness does to others is that it makes them kind themselves.”

e-Notify Emergency Messages Will Be Communicated via New Vendor Beginning December 14

Fairfax County Public Schools will be moving to a new vendor to provide emergency and essential email, text, and phone notifications beginning December 14, 2018.

Parents and guardians who have included a cell phone number (in the cell phone field) on a student’s emergency care card will receive a text message on December 14 to confirm the account is set up to receive text messages from FCPS. You do not need to do anything when you receive the text message from the new vendor, School Messenger, on December 14. If you do not receive a text message, please check the contact information listed on your child’s emergency care card in weCare. Your cell phone number must be listed in the cellphone field in order to receive text messages from FCPS.

New this year, parents can enter their student’s cell phone number in weCare so that their student will also receive text messages for delayed openings, school closings, and late bus notifications. The student’s cell phone number will need to be entered in Section 4, under Additional Information. If the student’s cell phone is listed in weCare, they will also receive the text message on December 14.

If you currently receive emergency and essential communications via email, text, or phone, you do not need to do anything as you will continue to receive this information.

Emergency and essential information includes: emergencies; delayed openings/school closings; attendance; early release; buses running late; low lunch balance; power, telephone, internet outages or facility repairs, back to school information, and important testing dates.

If you have recently changed your contact information, please be sure to update the emergency contact information in weCare.

As a reminder, in addition to email and text messages, all FCPS weather delays and openings are also posted on Twitter, Facebook, FCPS website, school websites, and local radio and television broadcasts.

Read more about Weather Cancellation Procedures.

Dear Panther Families,

As we wrap up the month of November, we continue to see all of the amazing things happening daily at Poplar Tree. One of the goals of our School Plan is to help our students grow in the Portrait of a Graduate Ethical and Global Citizenship skills. The Positivity Project character strengths, reminding language about being good virtual citizens and relationship building are all part of our focus to help all students grow and learn.

Our Giving Tree Collection continues until December 10. Please consider giving to those in our community who need some help and sharing a little warmth with gloves, socks, scarves and winter hats. The Giving Tree is located in our ftont lobby!

Have a spectacular weekend!

Ms. Andujar and Ms. Walker

Week at a Glance  November 19-December 10  Poplar Tree Giving Tree for Our Neighbor's Child  Positivity Project  This week our focus has been on knowing my words and actions affect others.

#OtherPeopleMatter is the motto, hashtag, and the spirit of the Positivity Project.

By consistently teaching students about the character strengths that everyone possesses, they will be able to see people based on the content of their character. This ability will enhance their self-awareness and self-confidence, understanding and appreciation of others, and interpersonal relationships – which will positively influence our youth (individually and collectively) across their lifespans.

This week we focused on ways to know that my words and actions affect others.

To quote Abraham Lincoln, “When I get ready to talk to people, I spend two thirds of the time thinking what they want to hear and one third thinking about what I want to say.”

Our students are changing the future with an Hour of Code!

We live in a world surrounded by technology. And we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on understanding how technology works. But only a tiny fraction of us are learning how technology works. Fewer than half of all schools teach computer science.

That’s why our entire school is joining in on The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week (December 3-9). More than 100 million students worldwide have already tried the Hour of Code.

Our Hour of Code is making a statement that Poplar Tree Elementary is ready to teach these foundational 21st-century skills. Starting next week, on the desktop of every student computer, there will be a link to this website with lots of coding activities. Our students will have the opportunity to explore these activities in their classrooms, but we also encourage your children to participate at home!

Questions about the Hour of Code? Contact our School Based Technology Specialist, Leslie Leisey at lfleisey@fcps.edu. You can also click here for even more information!

Please remember that there is no school Wednesday, Nov. 21 - Friday, Nov. 23 for the Thanksgiving Holiday. The PTES Main Office will close at 4:30 on Tuesday, November 20 and will reopen at 8:00 on Monday, November 26.

We are also on Holiday Homework Break. No assignments will be given for the break. Nothing will be due and there are no assessments/tests on the Monday or Tuesday after Thanksgiving (Nov. 26-27).

We hope each of you has a happy and safe Thanksgiving holiday and we will see you next Monday!

Ms. Andujar and Ms. Walker

Thursday, November 29: 4th grade Colonial Day

Friday, November 30: SCA Spirit Day- Mismatched/Backwards Day Positivity Project  This week our focus has been on the character strength of gratitude.

We continued our focus on gratitude this week as we approach Thanksgiving. Gratitude is the single best predictor of individual well-being. It is correlated with increased energy, empathy, happiness and optimism. Gratitude is less about feeling indebted and more about being aware of the consideration, kindness, and generosity of others. It’s also important to note that gratitude is not about ignoring the negative aspects of life; it’s simply being aware of and thankful for what is good.

Dear Panther Families,

We had a wonderful time this week with the 5th grade DIG project, our Thanksgiving Luncheon and the Book Fair, even as Mother Nature tried to change our plans. It was so great to see our student and family engagement in learning. Thank you for all of the volunteers who helped with all three of these activities. We are very grateful for all of the Poplar Tree volunteers!!

It is hard to believe that next week is Thanksgiving already. Remember we have regular school hours on both Monday and Tuesday. All FCPS schools and offices are closed Wednesday-Friday.

Our Annual Giving Tree Collection also begins on Monday. All of the scarves, winter hats, gloves and socks are given to Our Neighbors Child. They are a non-profit, community based organization supporting children in need in western Fairfax County. Please consider donating the items listed above to help keep children warm in the winter months.

Please remember to use the form on our web-page, call the attendance line (703-633-7400) or email to let us know any changes to your child's school day (absence, coming  in late or leaving early).

Have an awesome weekend,

Ms. Andujar and Ms. Walker

Homework Free Breaks

We wanted to share that all FCPS high school principals have agreed to have “homework free breaks” during major FCPS student holidays. At Poplar Tree we are also setting "homework free breaks."

Teachers are asked to not assign homework over Thanksgiving, Winter Break, and Spring Break and not have any projects due or any assessments on the first two days after the holiday.

Everyone has worked hard and needs some time to relax and rejuvenate.
