❗ Inclement Weather Virtual Learning for Thursday

GovDelivery1 week 1 day ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Inclement Weather Virtual Learning Thursday

Due to the weather forecast calling for snow in the early morning, all Fairfax County Public Schools’ students will participate in virtual learning tomorrow. Students will have synchronous (teacher-led) instruction with a two-hour delay for middle schools and high schools. All elementary schools will begin at 10:30 a.m. During this delay, please ensure that your instructional device is charged, and that you are able to access Schoology and Zoom links.

The previously-scheduled early dismissal will remain in effect. Students will be dismissed from virtual instruction two hours early. This will allow instructional staff the two hours needed to close out the quarter.

Poplar Tree's Schedule for Thursday

Your child's teacher will also be sending an email with additional directions. Students have been practicing on how to access their classroom zoom link.

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

Thank you for helping us have a great week. As we prepare to observe the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday, January 17, we are also watching for the potential of winter weather early in the week. We used all of our traditional snow days during last week’s snowstorm. Any future inclement weather days will include virtual learning whenever possible.

We all need to prepare in order to have a successful inclement weather virtual learning day. Here at Poplar Tree, teachers and staff will make sure students have the devices and accessories they need and will go over how to log in to their virtual learning tools. Teachers will let students know what to expect for their classes.

At home, we ask that you do a few simple things that will make an inclement weather virtual learning day run smoothly:

  • Make sure students bring their device home Friday and be sure the device is charged ahead of Tuesday.
  • Review the Student Technology Readiness Checklist with your child and complete all the at-home readiness steps.
  • Remind your child that the inclement weather virtual learning day schedule includes a two-hour delay so they can check their devices and make sure they are able to log in properly.
  • The bell schedule for all elementary schools is 10:30 - 3:15. There will be a common lunch/family choice across all classes at Poplar Tree from 11:30 - 12:30. Classroom teachers will email Individual class schedules.
  • Remind your child that attendance will be taken on inclement weather virtual learning days.

During weather events, FCPS must consider power outages, technical connection issues, and whether students have access to devices that they may not have taken home the night before. FCPS will announce a virtual learning day in the weather closure announcement on our website and social media channels and through email communications and local media.

Thank you for your help in making sure an inclement weather virtual learning day is a successful one for your child. Enjoy the weekend and we look forward to engaging with our students on Tuesday.

Have a great weekend!

Take care,

Sue Andujar, Principal

Carol Larsen, Assistant Principal

Live Streaming during COVID

GovDelivery2 weeks 2 days ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Live Streaming and COVID Definitions:

Quarantine: separates and restricts the movement of people who were exposed (close contact) to a contagious disease to see if they become sick.

Isolation: separates sick people (tested positive for COVID) with a contagious disease from people who are not sick.

Asynchronous: means students are completing work independently that has been assigned by a teacher.

Live-Streaming Instruction: Student virtually accesses classroom instruction for Morning Meeting, Language Arts, and Math for a whole class lesson. Educators call those lessons focus lessons. These lessons are usually 10 -20 minutes long.

What happens if my child is in isolation or quarantine?
  • Please make sure to email your child's teacher and complete the Poplar Tree attendance form to notify us of your child's COVID related absence.
  • Your child's teacher will then contact you with next steps via an email.
  • This email will contain instructions and times for accessing the live streaming and any asynchronous work assignments. Live streaming will begin after the 3rd day of absence.
  • As noted in the definition above, live streaming lessons will typically be 10-20 minutes in length.

  • Any asynchronous digital assignments will be accessed via Schoology.
  • If your child has their computer at school, you may arrange a time to pick it up.
  • Sometimes, teachers may leave work that needs to be completed on paper at the front of the school for you to pick up.

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a safe and healthy winter break. The year 2022 has certainly started off with a bang. Snow totals like we haven’t seen since 2016, a week of snow days, and an unfortunate COVID surge. We know this continues to be a scary and unsettling time, and we will continue to follow all safety measures to help keep our students and staff healthy. We also know that COVID will impact us over the next several weeks; and, as we have done throughout this pandemic, we will think flexibly and work together as a team to try and maintain a normal school day. We also need your continued help in keeping your child home if they are not feeling well. There will be a light at the end of this tunnel, and we are in this together!

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

It's hard to believe that this is the last Paw Print of 2021. As we approach the New Year and reflect on 2021, there is a great deal to celebrate. We were able to successfully begin the school year and remain open. And, school almost felt like normal (but with masks). We were able to hold the Panther Prowl which was one of our first in person events in over a year.  The COVID vaccine was approved for our elementary aged students, and adults were able to receive boosters. Many families were able to see each other in person for the first time in over a year. These are just a few of the things that we can celebrate. And, as we celebrate, we know there will be continued worries and struggles as we approach 2022. Each New Year begins with it potential and the unknown. One thing we can guarantee for 2022 is our continued commitment to our students and families. Together, as a team, we can and will accomplish great things!

We also want to thank the PTA for providing lunch from Panera for the Poplar Tree staff this week. It was delicious!

Have a safe Winter Break and a Happy New Year!

A Disney December!

To celebrate our last two weeks before Winter Break, we will be having a "Disney December!" Starting Monday December 6, each day will be a Spirit Day that relates to a Disney movie! We'll also play songs and/or clips from these movies during our Good Morning Poplar Tree news show!

We can't wait to see all the magical Disney spirit over the next two weeks!✨   Reminder:  Window for AAP Level IV (full-time) Referrals to Close December 15, 2021

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for full-time advanced academic programs (level IV AAP services) may submit the AAP Level IV Referral Form to Kim Keleher ([email protected]) no later than December 15.

The window to submit an AAP Level IV Referral Form is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for full-time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Level IV services can be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for AAP Level IV will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of professionals from various schools review materials to determine eligibility for level IV placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing Kim Keleher ([email protected]). Referrals for AAP Levels II-III (part-time services) are screened at the local school.

For more information, there are parent presentations available on the FCPS AAP website (under “Presentations”) that contain information similar to our fall parent information meetings at Poplar Tree.

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

We hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!

Starting this week, students may obtain COVID-19 diagnostic testing at six drive-through sites in Fairfax County. Diagnostic testing is provided for anyone who has symptoms or is identified as a close contact of someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19.

COVID-19 testing helps us reduce the virus’ spread and keep our schools safe places for all students to learn. I encourage you to utilize our new diagnostic testing services as needed.

Appointments are not required for diagnostic testing but families must register in the secure online portal. When you register and provide consent for your child to be tested, they will also be added to Poplar Tree's screening testing pool. If you do not wish for them to be part of the weekly screening testing pool, simply log back into the online portal after your child’s test is complete and withdraw consent.

More information about diagnostic and screening testing, including site locations and schedules, is available on our website

Take care,

Sue Andujar, Principal

Carol Larsen, Assistant Principal

If you are considering a COVID vaccination, FCPS and the health department are offering the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5-11 at ten clinics located at schools across Fairfax County. Clinics will be held after school hours, evenings, and weekends. All children are welcome and a parent or other responsible adult is required to attend with them. No appointment is necessary, and all vaccinations are free. For locations and clinic hours, click here. The health department website has information about other options for children’s COVID-19 vaccination. #VaxUP

You might have seen information about optional screening testing at schools. Poplar Tree's screening day is on Wednesdays from 1:00 - 3:00. The screening testing is completed by the vendor LTS.

One-time parent/legal guardian consent is required to begin COVID screening testing for a student to be tested at school. You may withdraw your consent for testing at any time. If you want your child to begin participating in COVID-19 screening testing, you must pre-register your child(ren) and provide consent using the LTS secure online portal. If you do not want your child to participate in COVID-19 screening testing, no action is required. You will have the option each week to update your child’s vaccination and consent for testing.

For all the details about optional COVID-19 screening testing, visit the FCPS website and review the FCPS COVID-19 Screening Testing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document.

We hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday! We wish you safe travels and joyous gatherings with family and friends.

Take care,
