Dear Poplar Tree Families,

We hope you had a great week! It warmed our hearts to welcome some of our kindergarten students back into the building. The students were most excited to see Mr. Thompson, one of our PE teachers, in person, and they also had great fun playing "green light, right light" during recess. We all need to remember to find the joy like our kindergartners 🙂.

Stay safe and have a wonderful weekend!

Rising 7th Grade Tdap Immunization Requirement

Virginia Law requires that all students entering seventh grade receive a booster dose of the Tdap vaccine prior to the beginning of school. The Tdap vaccine protects against tetanus (lockjaw), diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) and is usually given around the age of eleven.

For your child to begin 7th grade you will need to submit one of the following documents before the first day of school.  It is recommended that all paperwork be submitted to the school office by July 31, 2021.

Acceptable documentation can be one of the following:

  1. A copy of your child’s immunization record showing the Tdap vaccine.
  2. A note on a healthcare provider’s letterhead stating the date the Tdap vaccine was given.
  3. A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
  4. A notarized Religious Exemption Form which is available online at:

http://www.doe.virginia.gov/support/health_medical/certificate_religious_exemption.pdf

The Tdap booster is available from your child’s healthcare provider or the Fairfax County Health Department. The Health Department Clinic locations and hours are available online at: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/health/clinics or by calling 703-246-2411. Please note that students receiving immunizations at the Health Department must be accompanied by an adult and should bring their immunization records with them.

Seventh grade students will not be allowed to begin school in August 2021 without submitting proper documentation.

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

Happy Valentine's Day! We are busy preparing for the return of students and appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through our to do list. All families in grades K-6 should have received an email directly from Mrs. Larsen verifying your choice for instruction (virtual or in-person). For those families that chose in-person instruction, your email also states the days your child or children will be attending school in-person.

We are excited to welcome additional students back into our building, and we also continue to be excited about the outstanding work our staff is doing to keep students engaged and learning virtually. We are a Poplar Tree family of learners and every student is important to us! We look forward to the day when all students return to the building in person. And, until that time, please know that all staff are working tirelessly to meet the needs of all in-person and virtual students. We are in this together!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

We hope everyone had a good week! We are excited to share that many of our staff will begin receiving the COVID vaccine over the next few weeks. We do not have any updates as to when students will return to in-person learning, and we are hopeful that with the vaccine the return will happen sooner rather than later. The School Board will review the Return to School plan the beginning of February.

Just a reminder that there is no school next week on Monday and Wednesday and on Friday there is a 2 hour early release.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Mondays Clarification

We know that during the last few weeks Mondays have been confusing, and we apologize.

There will not be school for students the next two Mondays due to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday on January 18 and a Teacher Workday on January 25.

Beginning February 1 and throughout the month of February, Mondays will return to how they looked in the fall. Teachers will have Morning Meeting with their class, assign asynchronous activities, and meet with small groups of students.

Once students begin returning to in-person instruction, Mondays might need to change again. We appreciate your understanding and flexibility. Stay tuned.

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

Happy New Year! We hope everyone had safe and fun-filled holiday season.

During the school board meeting on Tuesday, Dr. Brabrand and the board made the decision to pause in-person instruction for all students since the community transmission of COVID-19 in Fairfax County remains high. Dr. Brabrand will provide an update on the Return to School plan to the School Board on Tuesday, February 2.

Because the county will not be transporting students to school during the pause in our plan, we will not be moving to the new bell schedule on January 12. We will continue to use the current bell schedule and will communicate any future changes to the bell schedule in advance.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

We hope this message finds you healthy and safe. Due to winter break, this is the last Paw Print of 2020, and our next Paw Print will be sent on January 8. The year 2020 has certainly been a unique and challenging one filled with loss and heartache for many, and we believe there is still a great deal to celebrate. A Ted Talk titled Celebrate What's  Right in The World! was shared with us and we wanted to share it with all of you. It reminds us all to try and focus on what is right rather than always focusing on what is wrong. Our hope is that 2021 is filled with more joy, laughter, and hope, and a return to "normal".

Stay safe, healthy, and happy New Year!

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

We hope this message finds you and your family healthy and safe. There was a School Board work session yesterday. We wanted to highlight a couple of important points for you. A plan was shared to bring students cohort groups by grade level back into the building beginning in mid January. Once student cohorts begin returning, our bell schedule will change. Our most likely adjusted bell schedule would be 9:10-3:55. Again, our bell schedule will only change when student cohorts begin returning to the building. Please be on the lookout for information over the next several weeks and opportunities to attend Q&A sessions with both of us.

This year certainly has had its share of plan changes. As we know, change is the only constant. And, we also know that change and uncertainty can cause frustration and anxiety. Our hope is to welcome students back into the building soon after the New Year. Regardless of the plan, our staff continues to be committed to providing an outstanding learning experience for your children and a sense of community and belonging. We are in this together and will continue to keep you informed along the way.

Remember “Amazing things happen everywhere!”.

Stay safe, healthy, and have a great weekend!
