Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms will be included in your child’s back-to-school/orientation packets and are available online for Elementary (K-6) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/elementary-family-life-education , Middle School (7-8) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/middle-school-academics-7-8/family-life-education-fle, and High School (9-12) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/high-school-academics-9-12/family-life-education-fle.  Parents/guardians wishing to opt their child out of instruction may complete and return the opt-out form or scan and email a copy of the completed form prior to Family Life Education Instruction.  An opt-out request can also be made in an email to Carol Larsen (calarsen@fcps.edu) which indicates the lesson(s) the child will be opted out of, please add “FLE Opt Out” in the subject heading for the email.  Also be sure to include the student’s name and homeroom teacher in the email message. The actual opt-out form is not required.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) , Middle School (7-8) , and High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in FCPS 24-7 (Blackboard) Parent View https://fcps.blackboard.com/.  Account information is available at your local school or online at http://www.fcps.edu/is/instructionaltechnology/247help/parents.shtml.  Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the Fairfax County Regional Library in the City of Fairfax (this location does not have media).  Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Program questions may be addressed at your child’s school or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or by contacting Carrie Reynolds, Health and Physical Education Coordinator at cfreynolds@fcps.edu.

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

I hope everyone had a great first week of the 2020-21 school year! It was great fun for us to go into classrooms this week. We enjoyed seeing the students and witnessing first hand the engaging learning activities that the teachers created. We heard laughter, saw students engaged in small group and large group activities, and felt the excitement in each classroom. As we reflect on this first week of the 2020-21 school year, we feel incredibly grateful to be a part of this learning community!

Stay safe, healthy, and have a wonderful weekend!

Digital Resources - Parent Consent

At Poplar Tree, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here.

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. We are so excited to have such an amazing team here at Poplar Tree. We have some new faces at Poplar Tree, some familiar faces in new places and some familiar faces in the same places. Please check out the Meet our Staff section of the PTES Webpage which lists the staff members on each team and includes a picture and brief video.

Nancy Billington, special education teacher, decided to retire this summer. She decided that after 29 years as a teacher in Fairfax County it was time for a new phase of her life. We wish Ms. Billington all the best!

Grade Level Instructional Schedule

We appreciate everyone's patience as we developed our instruction schedule for each grade level. We were very thoughtful when creating this schedule. We kept in mind the age of students, the need for movement breaks, and ways to ensure that teachers could meet with individual or small groups of students. The virtual learning day cannot replace an in person day, and we are committed to finding ways for students to connect with teachers, their content, and each other.

The instructional schedule can be accessed by clicking here

  • What is Panther Time? - Panther Time is designated time during the day that teachers can work with individual students or small groups of students.
  • What is Family Choice Time? - This is a time for students and families to choose an activity like access a choice board activity, read a book, draw, play outside, etc.
  • What is a Special? - Specials are Art, PE, Music, FLES, and Library.
  • What is Reflect and Connect Time?- This is a time for the entire class to come together with the teacher and reflect on the day's learning.

We want to hear from our STUDENTS!

As we prepare to embark on our journey of learning for the 2020-2021 school year, we promise to do the best we can to make our virtual learning as successful as possible. We know that some parts of distance learning were great, but also recognize the need for refinement and improvement.

We are asking for our students to share their favorite parts of distance learning. What truly engaged them? What made them excited? We want to hear their voices! There are two ways students can do this.

  1. Add a video to this Flipgrid. Please note: the videos are moderated and will NOT appear right away once they are recorded. This does not mean the recording didn't work!
  2. Complete this Google Form sharing feedback.
Thank you in advance for helping us work together to make our virtual start to the year the absolute BEST!

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

On Tuesday night the school board supported Dr. Brabrand’s recommendation to start the 2020-21 school year virtually for all students. This decision probably caused some of you to experience a variety of emotions. Our Poplar Tree staff also experienced a range of emotions after this decision. This is an uncertain and unprecedented time. What isn’t uncertain, is our commitment to all of you to provide the best educational experience for our students.  As a Poplar Tree family, we will come together and continue to find creative ways to engage our students and remain a strong and connected school community.  As I shared with you when I became your principal 3 years ago, teamwork is a core value of mine. I could not be prouder of our school staff for their teamwork and dedication to our students. Many of our teachers are participating in professional development over the summer on ways to make the virtual environment one where students can succeed.

While the beginning of the school year might not look the way every one of us would have hoped it to look, the staff and I are busy preparing for a successful 2020-21 school year.  We are preparing for our virtual opening and also keeping in mind the need to transition smoothly into in-person instruction when FCPS deems it safe to bring students back into school buildings.

I will continue to provide updates throughout the summer.

Remember – Amazing Things Happen Everywhere!

Stay safe and healthy,

Sue Andujar

Principal

Dear Families,

Thank you to those of you who were able to join our Chantilly Pyramid ES Town Hall this morning. I apologize to any family that had difficulty joining the Town Hall due to the size limit of the session. Below is a link to a recording of the meeting.

To view the recording of the Chantilly Pyramid ESTown Hall please click on this link.

I would also like to share the following information and reminders:

  • At the school board meeting yesterday, it was decided that for in-person classes students with last names beginning with A-K will attend school on Tuesday and Thursday and for students with Last names beginning with L-Z will attend Wednesday and Friday. For siblings at different schools and/or with different last names, adjustments will be made to allow families to have the same schedule for their children’s in-school attendance, whenever possible.
  • To see the PowerPoint from yesterday’s School Board session, please click here and  scroll down to the bottom of the page to find PowerPoint regarding Return to School
  • There is a wealth of information for families found on the FCPS Return to School
  • The deadline for selecting online or in-person instruction is needed by tomorrow, July 15.  Parents can select the preferred option here.

This is certainly a challenging time, and we will get through it together!

Take care,

Sue Andujar, Principal
