After 25 years of service, Mr. King, our Poplar Tree Building Supervisor, will be retiring in June.  On June 8th from 4:00-7:00 pm, we will celebrate “Mr. King Day”.  Please stop by the LA Room to wish Gary the very best on his retirement. Enjoy a cookie and juice and reminisce with him about his many years at Poplar Tree Elementary School.

      SOL Testing Electronic Policy Reminder

      SOL TESTING

VDOE and Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) have an electronic device policy which is to be followed during all SOL testing. To maintain test security, the possession of cell phones or other electronic devices (including wearable technology) in the testing room is prohibited. If a student is discovered with a prohibited electronic device while in a test environment, the student’s test will be stopped, the electronic device will be confiscated, and the student will be removed from the test environment. School administrators, consistent with the Acceptable Use Policy and Student Rights & Responsibilities, have authority to search the “item of personal belonging” (e.g., the cell phone or other device, including wearable technology) if it is believed to contain evidence of a violation of school regulations (in this case, cheating). School administrators have the right to apply school-based consequences based upon their investigation of the situation. Please talk to your student about the electronic device policy and the serious consequences of violating it. Students should consider leaving these devices at home on

Students will be using their FCPSOn Devices for SOL testing.  Students will need to bring a fully charged laptop and power charger the day before each SOL test.  While in the testing location, these devices may be used for SOL testing ONLY.  Accessing other websites, programs, social media, emails, or network folders is prohibited and is subject to the same consequences stated above.

While the main testing window is from Tuesday, May 15 through Thursday, May 24, this policy applies to all make ups and retakes as well.

Poplar Tree second grade Lego team "Hydro Panther Warriors" attended First Lego League Junior (FLL Jr) expo at Explore More Discovery Museum in Harrisonburg, VA on Sunday, April 29. Our team displayed a Lego model showing water's journey from source, to purification through a water treatment plant, and finally to water use at home. Our team model used two motorized parts using Lego WeDo controllers. The team members took turns to operate motors and demonstrate the model to visitors.

We received great review comments and the team won Lil' Einstein Award (for in-depth knowledge of the model and challenging theme topic) at the expo.

Team Hydro Panther Warriors is made up of these second grade students: Arjun, Jay, Ketan, Pranav, and Prathik. The team met once every week staring February till the expo date and went for a field trip to H. L. Mooney Water Reclamation center in Prince William county during the Spring Break.

The team was proudly wearing Poplar Tree Panther's Paw on their T-Shirts!

Our team's work was highly praised by the judges and received "Lil' Einstein Award" for their creative model and technical depth. "4 Aquateers" were also invited to showcase their Poster and Model at the "2018 USA Science & Engineering Festival" in Washington, DC in early April.

The team also showcased the same model and poster at the PTES Science Expo and received praises by the peer students and judges.

            Uncle Slam's Reading Program

The Potomac Nationals are teaming up with Poplar Tree ES (and other local schools) to help promote reading through Uncle Slam’s Reading Program!

            How the Program Works

On Friday, students in grades K-2 received their official Uncle Slam’s Reading Program bookmark. Uncle Slam wants students to read four books that are appropriate for their reading level and keep track of the titles by writing them on the back of the bookmark. After reading the 4 books, bring the bookmark to the Potomac Nationals Ticket Office and receive TWO FREE grandstand tickets to one of the four designated reading program gamesThe stadium’s address is 7 County Complex Ct., Woodbridge, VA 22192.

For students in grades 3-6, an icon will be uploaded onto their computers on Monday.  Within the icon, there is a Google Form for the students to complete.  Once it is completed and submitted, students will receive their bookmark.

            Game Dates for Poplar Tree

ES has selected Friday, June 15  at 7:05 as their game date.  It will be a Jurassic Park 25th Anniversary theme.  Other promotions for May 6th include a post-game kids run the bases, player autograph session and catch on the field and post-game fireworks.

If you can’t attend the June 15th  game, you may also use your bookmark at one of the following games:

Sunday, May 6th at 1:05 —Superhero Theme

Friday, June 15th at 7:05 pm –Jurassic Park Theme

                LAUNCHING MENTAL HEALTH GOOGLE SITE

Mental health has been  a “hot button” topic in our country over the past few months.  School counselors are excited to share a new mental health resource site for our Chantilly community.  As elementary, middle, and high school counselors continue to work with families in each school, we felt it necessary to share similar information and resources with everyone in grades K through 12.  The Chantilly Pyramid’s comprehensive Google site link can be found here https://sites.google.com/view/chantillycounselorsresources/home.  Feel free to access the site on your own.  If you have specific questions or needs, contact your child’s school counselor directly.

If you have a child who will be 5 years old on or before September 30, 2018, your child is eligible to attend kindergarten in the 2018-2019 school year.  If you have not yet contacted us about your rising kindergartner, please call our registrar, Kirsten Prindle, at 703-633-7400 or email kcprindle@fcps.edu as soon as possible to receive registration forms and information.Mark your calendars for Kindergarten Orientation on Friday, April 20, 9-10am.  This event will include an information session for parents and an introduction to the classrooms and kindergarten activities for our rising kindergarten students.

Please share this news with your neighbors!

Important Immunization Requirement: Do You Have a Student Entering Sixth Grade Next Year?

If yes, he or she may need a booster dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis). Sixth grade students cannot begin school in August without documentation of the Tdap booster. Parents or guardians should ask their private healthcare provider, or the health department, to review their child’s immunization record if they are unsure if their child has received the Tdap booster. Students who have received a Tdap booster between the ages of seven and eleven do not need another dose. Documentation must be provided to the school student information assistant (SIA) or registrar as soon as possible. Learn more about the Tdap booster

Book Fair Poplar Tree Elementary is excited about our upcoming Book Fair.  At the Book Fair you will find the latest and finest titles for kids, as well as books of interest for parents and teachers.  The Book Fair will run April 9 - 13 in the library and Language Arts room.   Children will preview the book selections on Monday and Tuesday, April 9 and 10, then shopping begins the next day.  There will be family shopping hours after school from 7:00pm to 9:00pm on Tuesday, April 10.  You can also purchase and contribute books to your child's classroom library through our Teachers' Wish List program.  The Book Fair is a great way to get everyone excited about reading.  Your support allows us to provide additional books and materials for use in the library.
Now, to make all this happen, we will need parent volunteers!  Visit the Sign-up Genius here to volunteer today.

                Safety/Security Reminders

As we continue to focus on safety and security at Poplar Tree we have just a few reminders.

                • All exterior doors must be locked and closed. Please do not prop open the doors and look to be sure they are closed behind you as you enter and exit the building.
                • Per the FCPS Proper Use of Electronic Door Access, each visitor will be asked to identify themselves and their reason for entering Poplar Tree.
                • Staff has also been asked to be careful of what Safety and Security call "piggybacking." Piggybacking is when a visitor comes in behind someone who has been granted entry.
                • Visitors must sign in with the online system using their driver's license or other government issued photo ID.

Please know that staff are not trying to be rude or deny any person with legitimate reasons to enter the building. These are just some of the items that have been shown to increase the safety of schools.

SOL season is quickly approaching, and all students in grades 3-6 will be testing on the FCPSOn student laptops this year.  Here are a few things that students and parents need to do and be aware of prior to testing, to make sure SOL testing season is a success:

                • Students need to shut down their computer each day before leaving school or home. Shutting down daily will ensure that computers don’t go into update mode during SOL testing. It also helps maintain battery life and prevents overheating.
                • If your child's computer needs to be fixed, please have your child tell his/her teacher as soon as possible to allow enough time for repairs prior to SOL testing.
                • If your child's charger is broken or misplaced, please let the teacher know immediately so a replacement can be ordered.

Chantilly HS Science National Honors Society will be hosting a STEM Expo for elementary school students on April 11th from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. It is a really good interactive and hands-on opportunity for Poplar Tree students to explore science outside the classroom environment while having lots of fun doing it!
