Most Positive Ranking Items (More than 90% of participants agreed or strongly agreed with the following statements):

  • My child feels safe at school.
  • Information provided to me by the school is easy to understand.
  • This school welcomes families of different backgrounds and cultures.
  • I feel welcome at my child’s school.

Least Positive Ranking Items (More than 20% of participants disagreed or strongly disagreed with the following statements):

  • This school provides me with opportunities to connect with other
    families.
  • I received enough information about what I can do at home to help my child improve his or her learning.
  • I received enough information about what I can do at home to support my child with mental health and wellness.
  • The school staff works with me to identify social and emotional skills
that my child can develop to be successful.

We will continue to to develop plans to support family engagement and will work to improve in these areas listed as least positive. Please share your ideas or willingness to support this work by emailing Principal Andujar at [email protected]. POPLAR TREE GRAD WALK 2022

Poplar Tree’s 2022 Grad Walk was a memorable one as we welcomed our 2016 graduates home.  As the sounds of Rockin’ Panther played throughout our building, our students and staff cheered as the Seniors walked through our hallways once more. Afterwards, the Seniors stopped into classrooms to visit with teachers and students.  For more pictures, follow us on Twitter @PoplarTreeES or @PTES_Counselors.

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

It was an emotional week. We share in your grief, fear, and frustration about the tragedy at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas on Tuesday. These events impact us all in personal ways. One thing we all have in common is our condemnation of these senseless acts of violence.

Another thing we have in common is our commitment to keeping our schools, and the students and employees within them, safe. FCPS and Poplar Tree work to make critical safety upgrades to our buildings, plan and practice day-to-day safety and security measures, and respond swiftly to any concern or possible event.

We also know that our students need care, support, and understanding as they learn about acts of gun violence. We have that support in place and encourage everyone to use them. The National Association of School Psychologists has a helpful resource (in multiple languages) for families and educators to support them when talking with students about school violence. If you or your child need additional support, please reach out to our school counselors, Beth Mertens or Shari Hirsch

We stand together, as the Poplar Tree ES community and in solidarity with the Robb Elementary School community.

Take care,

Sue Andujar, Principal

Carol Larsen, Assistant Principal

Lockdown Drill Notification

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. We have a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan for our school that is reviewed and updated regularly. Our plan includes procedures on how to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Students and staff regularly practice these drills every school year. We also practice lockdown drills.

A new Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. We are required to practice lockdown drills two times a year. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training, they are instruction and classroom based.

We will conduct a lockdown drill at our school soon. Our pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students are exempt from mandatory participation in lockdown drills during the first 60 days of the school year. They will participate in our upcoming drill for the first time this school year.

Additional information on our lockdown drill program to include parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this content, you should discuss the value of these safety drills with your child.

Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe.

Thank you to all of the families who donated to the Light the Night Campaign! We raised a total of $6,220 which goes directly to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. This is incredible and we couldn’t have done it without your generosity. Third grade was the grade level that donated the most money, so some teachers will complete a dare voted on by the third grade students. It will be taped and aired on the school news show later this month. Ask your student about it—it’s sure to be a lot of fun!

💻Supporting your child in the Digital World🌐

Dear Families,

As you know, our students all have access to a school Google account - called Google Workspace for Education. Google Workspace allows our students to communicate, collaborate, and store files related to school. This account also has certain safeguards in place that only allow certain features of Google. For example, they can not use Google Chat and they can only email and share documents with others in Fairfax County. You can learn more about Google Workspace for Education HERE.

We wanted to let you know that we are aware that some of our 5th grade students have created personal Google accounts and have been accessing them on their school computers. Using these personal accounts, there have been chats happening between students. We cannot identify all students who have been a part of these chats, as not all of their emails include their names. We have talked with students about why they should not be accessing personal Google accounts on their school devices and emphasized that the restrictions on their Google Workspace for Education account helps keep them safe. Luckily, FCPS has recently changed their browser restrictions and no longer allows for students to login to their personal Google accounts on their FCPS device. However, they could still access these accounts on personal devices.

We hope you take this opportunity to talk with your child about whether or not they have created a personal Google account and discuss the importance

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to our School Based Technology Specialist, Leslie Leisey, at [email protected]

Thank you!

Supporting Your Child

Now more than ever, it is extremely important for us to partner with families to help our children stay safe online.  If we can work together, we can help our children navigate the digital world safely as they learn to be more independent users of technology.

We wanted to make sure you were aware of a variety of resources that are available to you from the FCPS website

In addition, our School Based Technology Specialist will be at next week’s Principal Q&A on May 12 starting at 6:30 pm sharing some tips for supporting your child and their use of technology!

❗ COVID Letters/Process Explained

GovDelivery2 months ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

The COVID letters we must send can be confusing and at times stressful. Below is a brief summary of the process that we follow.

👉When a COVID positive case(s) is reported to the school, we send a generic letter to notify the community and staff of any reported cases that day.

👉👉If there are 3 or more confirmed positive cases in a class, it is considered a possible outbreak in that classroom. We send a specific letter to that impacted class with next steps.

👉👉👉Once the Health Department confirms the outbreak in the class, we send a generic community notification of the outbreak.

We hope this information helps you in understanding the different types of COVID letters.

Please know that we continue to ensure that surfaces are cleaned frequently and that students are washing their hands.

We also appreciate your help in keeping your child home when they are not feeling well.

Assessment Information Spring iReady Assessment Grades 1-6

The Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) School Board adopted iReady as an academic universal screener for use with all elementary school students in grades 1 through 6. The iReady assessment includes a reading test and a mathematics test. The purpose of this assessment is to identify students who may have gaps in foundational literacy and mathematics skills. An example of an additional diagnostic assessment is the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA). The iReady reading test, together with any necessary follow-up diagnostic assessments, also fulfills state testing expectations for primary grade students.

iReady assessments will be given to all students in Grades 1-6 at Poplar Tree this spring within the following testing window: April 12-May 20 Grades 1 & 2 and April 12- June 9 Grades 3-6

For the expected dates when your child will test, please contact your child’s teacher.  Additional information, including a short video, about the universal screener in FCPS can be found at the iReady Universal Screener webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/us). Light the Night Campaign

We are moving into the final week of our Light the Night campaign. Our campaign ends Friday, April 29. Our school goal this year is to raise $7500. So far we have raised just over $2600. Thank you to those of you who have donated! We are so excited to be able to raise money to help find a cure for Blood Cancer and to support the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. We hope to meet or exceed our goal! This year, our campaign will be 100% virtual. In order to donate, please do one of the following:

  1. Donate on our school’s online donation page at https://pages.lls.org/ltn/nca/NorthVA21/poplarelementaryschool
  2. Donate on your child’s classroom donation page (see email from classroom teacher for this link)
  3. We encourage you to share these links with family members, community members, and through social media to help us raise as much money as possible
  4. The Student Council Association (SCA) officers have decided they wanted to help raise more money for the Light the Night Campaign, so they will be putting themselves up to get pied in the face! From 4/25-4/29, students will find four jars on a table in the lobby during arrival time. There will be one jar for each officer. Students can place money in whichever jar they’d like. The officer who has the most money in their jar at the end of the week will get pied in the face! All money collected in the jars will go DIRECTLY towards the Light the Night Campaign!

This year, we are doing a grade level competition at Poplar Tree. The grade level that donates the most money will have some brave teachers complete a dare voted on by students. So, help us raise money to see some of Poplar Tree’s teachers dump slime over their head, get turned into a human sundae, or maybe even get pied in the face! As of now, 4th grade in first with the most money raised and 3rd grade is in second place. Keep those donations coming!

Please contact Mrs. Sniffin, SCA teacher sponsor, at [email protected] if you have any further questions. Thank you so much for your support of this wonderful cause!

A Note About Ramadan for Our Poplar Tree Families

We understand that April 2 - May 1 is Ramadan, one of the holiest times on the Islamic calendar.  If your child needs an alternative space for lunch or prayer during this time, we will accommodate them.

Please email your child's school counselor and they will make arrangements:  Mrs. Hirsch (Grades 2,3,4- [email protected] ) or Ms. Mertens (Grades K, 1, 5 and 6- [email protected] ).

Based on iReady results, some students may require an additional assessment to further diagnose the specific learning areas that may need support.

If you have further questions about this assessment, please contact your child’s teacher or Carol Larsen, Assistant Principal/Test Coordinator ([email protected])

Kindergarten VKRP Spring Testing

The Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP) assessments provide actionable information that will assist teachers, school leaders, and parents/guardians in supporting student success in school and to better understand school readiness skills across the state of Virginia. This spring, all kindergarteners will participate in the three assessment components of the VKRP, which measure literacy, mathematics, self-regulation, and social skills. More information about the assessment can be found on the FCPS Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program Parent Notification webpage.  Testing will be conducted between April 12 and May 20.  If you have questions about the assessment or the specific assessment dates for your child, please contact your child’s teacher.

Light the Night Campaign

From April 11-April 29, our school will be participating in the Light the Night campaign, formerly known as Hero Squad and Pennies for Patients. Our school goal this year is to raise $7500. We are so excited to be able to raise money to help find a cure for Blood Cancer and to support the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. This year, our campaign will be 100% virtual. In order to donate, please do one of the following:

  1. Donate on our school’s online donation page at https://pages.lls.org/ltn/nca/NorthVA21/poplarelementaryschool
  2. Donate on your child’s classroom donation page. Check in with your child’s classroom teacher for more information and their specific link.
  3. We encourage you to share these links with family members, community members, and through social media to help us raise as much money as possible.

Please contact Mrs. Sniffin, SCA teacher sponsor, at [email protected] if you have any further questions. Thank you so much for your support of this wonderful cause!

Month of the Military Child

We join the rest of FCPS in celebrating the resilience of our military-connected children during April, the Month of the Military Child! Every year we take this opportunity to celebrate our military-connected children and thank them for their service as part of a military family.

We will be celebrating with a Spirit Week from April 18 - 22!

In addition, we invite our military children to record a Flipgrid video talking about what it means to them to be a military child. We will feature these videos on our Good Morning Poplar Tree news show during the week. To record a video, click HERE! (Password ptesmilitary)

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

FCPS shared information earlier this week about a new resource that will soon be available to all Poplar Tree students to support learning. All FCPS students will have unlimited access to online tutoring support services through Tutor.com at no cost.

Students can connect online any time, and in most subjects for as long as they need. Tutoring is focused instruction provided to students in a one-on-one format through voice or text chat. Tutors will focus on developing students’ strengths and capabilities in reading, mathematics, or other specified subjects. Tutoring services may be accessed before, during, or after school hours and/or on weekends through a link in Schoology.

All tutors must pass a rigorous application process including an extensive background check. No personal information is shared between a student and tutor. All sessions are recorded and transcripts are available for review by teachers and parents/guardians.

Students will automatically have access to the Tutor.com tutoring service unless a parent/guardian submits an opt-out request. Watch for an email soon that will include the online tutoring services notice and opt-out information. Additionally, a hard copy form will be sent home with every student.

For additional information, visit our online tutoring services website. As always, please contact us if you have any questions.

Have a great weekend!

Sue Andujar, Principal

Carol Larsen, Assistant Principal

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

News reports of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia have caused fear and anxiety for many families in our community for many different reasons. Some are worried about friends and family living overseas, or the potential of a loved one who serves our country being sent overseas. Others fear escalation that could impact the safety of nearby countries and the global economy.

News coverage can also be triggering for families who have experienced violence here at home or war in other parts of the world. Many of our own FCPS families have left countries in conflict, fleeing war and violence, often leaving loved ones behind in the process of seeking safety. This comes at a time when our country is still recovering from a pandemic that has disrupted our daily lives for two years.

If your child needs additional help, please do not hesitate to reach out to our school counselors,  psychologist or social worker who can check in with your child at school.

Please know that we are here to support your family in any way that you need.

Take care,

Sue Andujar, Principal

Carol Larsen, Assistant Principal
