Dear Panther Families,

We had a wonderful time this week with the 5th grade DIG project, our Thanksgiving Luncheon and the Book Fair, even as Mother Nature tried to change our plans. It was so great to see our student and family engagement in learning. Thank you for all of the volunteers who helped with all three of these activities. We are very grateful for all of the Poplar Tree volunteers!!

It is hard to believe that next week is Thanksgiving already. Remember we have regular school hours on both Monday and Tuesday. All FCPS schools and offices are closed Wednesday-Friday.

Our Annual Giving Tree Collection also begins on Monday. All of the scarves, winter hats, gloves and socks are given to Our Neighbors Child. They are a non-profit, community based organization supporting children in need in western Fairfax County. Please consider donating the items listed above to help keep children warm in the winter months.

Please remember to use the form on our web-page, call the attendance line (703-633-7400) or email to let us know any changes to your child's school day (absence, coming  in late or leaving early).

Have an awesome weekend,

Ms. Andujar and Ms. Walker

Calling all Veterans and Active-Duty Military Personnel!

Poplar Tree Elementary would like to pay a special tribute to all veterans and active-duty military personnel at our Annual Veterans Day Assembly on Friday, November 9 @ 9:00 am. We would be honored to have you attend this special event.

Please RSVP by emailing Holly Walker, assistant principal, at hjwalker@fcps.edu or calling her at 703-633-7400, by November 1, 2018. Please share your name, military branch, military rank, child's name, a phone number and email.

If you are interested in presenting a short presentation or motivational speech (3-5 minutes) about your military career to the students, please share that in your email as well.

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Veterans Day is fast approaching!  This year we are continuing our Poplar Tree tradition of honoring our students’ military family members who have been or who are currently deployed overseas or serving in the military in some capacity.

We are asking parents to e-mail or send in an actual photo of their military family member to Katrina MacWhorter.  E-mailing is the best method.  Please include rank and military branch.  Please have all pictures turned into Katrina MacWhorter by Tuesday, November 6th at 8:00 a.m.  Her e-mail address is KMMacWhorter@fcps.edu

If you sent in a picture for the 2017 Veterans Day Slideshow and would like it to be included in the 2018 slideshow, please email Mrs. MacWhorter and provide the name/names of your loved ones.  There is no need to send a new photo.

Thank you!

A huge thank you to all of the parents who volunteered to help make the day a success.  Each year, we create a School Improvement and Innovation Plan to focus on continuous growth. This year we are focused on math instruction and the Portrait of a Graduate skill of Ethical and Global Citizenship. Dear Panther Families,  We had a great week. Our teachers shared teaching strategies and also heard some new ideas at the Chantilly Collaboration Professional Development Day.

We finished the CogAT testing and Walk and Bike to School went really well.

We hope to see many of you at Field Day next week. Please remember that you must come to the front office and sign in on the Visitor Management System with your photo ID before heading to the Field Day activities. You must sign in and get a sticker as a volunteer or a visitor.

Positivity Project  This week our focus has been on identifying and appreciating the good in others.  #OtherPeopleMatter is the motto, hashtag, and the spirit of the Positivity Project

This week we focused on ways to identify and appreciate the GOOD in other people. Identifying and appreciating the good in others isn’t always what comes naturally. Often, it’s easier to blame others for our problems or find flaws in others to use as excuses for our own jealousy, bitterness, or resentment.

To see the good in others, we must first slow down and take the time to pay attention. Look for the intentions behind people’s words and actions. If you feel slighted, you can use perspective and ask, “Did that person intend to hurt me or did he/she just come across in an awkward manner?”

So, why is this important? Identifying and appreciating the good in other people helps you see the world through a more positive – and less threatening – lens. If you’re constantly seeing the negative traits of people, you’re going to think the world is comprised of bad people – and you’re going to operate from a defensive posture. This isn’t to say that we should be naïve or see the world, and its people, through “rose-colored glasses.” It's just that we should strive to understand people's intent. If you see the good in another, they’re likely to see the good in you.

To quote the Dalai Lama, “The roots of all goodness lie in the soil of appreciation for goodness.”
