Dear Poplar Tree Families,

Last week we launched our PAWesome Hallway Behavior and PAWsitive Praise tickets. Just like last year, classes/groups of students can earn a PAWesome Hallway Behavior ticket for following our schoolwide hallway expectations. Students can earn a PAWsitive Praise ticket for demonstrating a Portrait of a Graduate (POG) Ethical and Global Citizen attribute. Each Monday on the Good Morning Poplar Tree news show we feature a student from each house who has received a Pawsitive Praise! The colored house with the most Hallway Behavior tickets by October 25 will get to participate in a "Monster Mash!"

Tonight is the Chantilly High School homecoming game! We hope to see many of our families at the parade and game!

🔒 Lockdown Drill Conducted Today🔒

GovDelivery3 days 20 hours ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Every school in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan in place. Keeping students and staff safe is a priority. We practice a number of safety drills throughout the school year, including lockdown drills which helps us know what to do if there is a potentially violent intruder inside the school or on school property.

Today, our school conducted a lockdown drill and teachers talked to students to prepare them for the drill.

We are very proud of our students today. They listened to directions and the drill was conducted in a calm and orderly fashion. Our students did a great job, and we encourage you to discuss the drill with them.  Additional guidance on discussions with your child about lockdown drills can be found in the Parent/Guardian tip letter, as well as on the frequently asked questions (FAQs) page.

Our emergency preparedness plans have been developed in coordination with the FCPS Office of Safety and Security, local law enforcement, emergency management officials, and FCPS mental health professionals. The plans are regularly reviewed and updated and include procedures on how to respond to critical incidents such as fires, tornadoes, and other events. Students and staff regularly practice safety drills.

I will continue to keep you informed of safety and security measures in place at our school. If you have questions, please call or contact the school office.  I appreciate your continued support in these matters.

Sincerely,

Sue Andujar - Principal

🔒 Lockdown Drill Information 🔒

GovDelivery5 days ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Providing a safe and supportive school environment is our number one priority. One of the ways we do this is by regularly reviewing and updating our school crisis management and emergency preparedness plans. Plans include how to respond to a variety of incidents such as fires, severe weather events, and other emergencies. It is critical to have safety drills each year so that our students and staff remember what to do if there is an emergency.

Virginia Law also requires schools to complete two lockdown drills a year, one within the first twenty days of the school session, and to notify parents/caregivers at least 24 hours in advance. We are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of scenario training.

We will conduct a lockdown drill at Poplar Tree tomorrow September 12. Our pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students are not required to participate in lockdown drills during the first 60 days of the school year. They will participate in our second and final drill later this school year.

Additional information including parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this information, it would be helpful to have a talk with your child about safety and school procedures. Below are some tips that can help frame your conversation:

  • Ask your child what they know about the drill, and how they feel about it.
  • Avoid scary and/or graphic details from the media.
  • Discuss that practicing how to be safe in a variety of situations is important because it helps to give them the confidence and knowledge to be safe.
  • Let them know it is okay to have feelings about the drill and that you and adults at their school are there to help them be safe and listen if they would like to talk more.

There will be school mental health staff available to help students with concerns around the lockdown drill. If you have questions, please reach out to us.

Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe.

Sincerely,

Sue Andujar - Principal

Academic Screening, Growth, and Diagnostic Tests

The Virginia government requires assessments for the Virginia Literacy Act (VLA), Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP) in all schools. These assessments help state officials understand literacy and school readiness needs across Virginia. Test results also help teachers, school leaders, and families know how to support each student’s learning and development. The Academic Screening, Growth, and Diagnostic Tests webpage  (https://www.fcps.edu/academic-screening-growth-and-diagnostic-tests) provides more information on these tests.

Our students will be taking these tests during the 1st quarter. You can which tests each grade level will be administering below.

Some students may need additional diagnostic tests to help teachers determine specific areas for support. If you have further questions about these assessments, please contact your student’s teacher or one of our school test coordinators Amy Alley, avalley@fcps.edu or Leslie Leisey, [email protected].

The purpose of our House System is to foster a sense of belonging, community, and friendly competition among our students. By grouping students into different houses, we aim to create a supportive environment where they can make new friends and develop teamwork skills. Our houses will also meet throughout the year for morning meetings and closing circles. Within each house, we have buddy classes. Our buddy classes will also get together from time to time to do a variety of activities that will encourage creative & critical thinking skills!

In addition to the EMAS, VKRP also requires PreK-K teachers to observe a student’s self-regulation and social skills using the Child Behavior Rating Scale (CBRS).

Based on academic screening results, some students may require a reading plan or math intervention plan. Some students may need additional diagnostic tests to help teachers determine specific areas for support. If you have further questions about these assessments, please contact your student’s teacher or one of our school test coordinators Amy Alley, avalley@fcps.edu or Leslie Leisey, [email protected].

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year! We are excited to see our students and families at Open House next week. Our school theme for the upcoming year is Uniquely US. This theme builds upon last year's theme Uniquely YOU!

Uniquely US

What does the theme Uniquely US mean here at Poplar Tree? We believe that each child is unique, contributing their individuality to our school community. We foster a strong sense of belonging where every student feels valued and empowered. Through engaging learning experiences, we cultivate curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning. Our school is a nurturing environment where students discover their passions, develop their talents, and become responsible, compassionate, and confident global citizens. Together, we create a vibrant and inclusive community that celebrates the power of "Uniquely Us."

Classroom Teacher Announcements

Next week you will be notified of your child's homeroom teacher. There continues to be a severe teacher shortage throughout the country. We are very fortunate to have all instructional positions filled with dedicated educators at Poplar Tree! We feel like we have the best team in the county. On Tuesday, August 13, you will receive an email directly from your child’s teacher welcoming you to the school year. Thank you so much for being positive with your child and helping them understand that it is impossible to place all students with a preferred best friend or teacher. Please also remember that it can take a few weeks for a child to acclimate to a new grade, peer group and teacher. ALL of our staff members work hard to make school a positive experience for ALL of our students.

We are excited to start this new year and to help all of our students reach their full potential. We will see you soon!

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

As another school year draws to a close, we want to reflect on all the remarkable achievements, heartwarming memories, and invaluable growth of our school community.

This year our students have grown as collaborators and communicators, learned more about what it means to be an ethical and global citizen, have had opportunities to think critically and creatively, all while being goal directed and resilient and persevering through it all!

To our 6th graders, congratulations! You've accomplished so much and are now poised to embark on exciting new adventures. Remember, the lessons learned here will stay with you – the knowledge you gained, the friendships you made, and the character you developed. We look forward to celebrating our 6th graders at their Promotion Ceremony on Tuesday, June 12!

A profound thank you to our dedicated staff. Your tireless efforts, support, and committment to education have empowered our students to thrive. To our families, your partnership has been instrumental in creating a positive learning environment.

Solve the puzzles and then find clues at the parks for a final meta-puzzle. Walk, bike, and roll at our wonderful local parks with friends and family.
