Dear Poplar Tree Families,

This week our 3rd - 6th graders had a visit from author W. Bruce Cameron! Cameron writes many books about dogs, so he shared with our students his love for dogs and was accompanied by Daisy, a service dog!. He also told them what it's like to write a film script. He gave them some great advice: in order to succeed, you first have to be willing to fail. Thank you to Ms. Riddile for organizing this Author Visit - our students had a great time!

Have a great weekend!

🔒 Lockdown Drill Conducted Today🔒

GovDelivery1 month ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Every school in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan in place. Keeping students and staff safe is a priority. We practice a number of safety drills throughout the school year, including lockdown drills which helps us know what to do if there is a potentially violent intruder inside the school or on school property.

Today, our school conducted a lockdown drill and teachers talked to students to prepare them for the drill.

We are very proud of our students today. They listened to directions and the drill was conducted in a calm and orderly fashion. Our students did a great job, and we encourage you to discuss the drill with them.  Additional guidance on discussions with your child about lockdown drills can be found in the Parent/Guardian tip letter, as well as on the frequently asked questions (FAQs) page.

Our emergency preparedness plans have been developed in coordination with the FCPS Office of Safety and Security, local law enforcement, emergency management officials, and FCPS mental health professionals. The plans are regularly reviewed and updated and include procedures on how to respond to critical incidents such as fires, tornadoes, and other events. Students and staff regularly practice safety drills.

I will continue to keep you informed of safety and security measures in place at our school. If you have questions, please call or contact the school office.  I appreciate your continued support in these matters.

Sincerely,

Sue Andujar - Principal

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

We hope you're having a wonderful week!

We'd like to send a friendly reminder about bringing toys to school. While we know many toys are fun and engaging, they can unfortunately become a distraction to learning during the school day. To ensure a focused and productive learning environment for all our students, we kindly ask that toys remain at home.

Of course, we understand that special comfort items may be necessary for some children, and we encourage you to discuss any specific needs with your child's teacher.

Thank you for your cooperation in helping us create a distraction-free learning environment. We appreciate your support!

Have a fabulous weekend!

Sue Andujar, Principal

🔒 Lockdown Drill Information 🔒

GovDelivery1 month ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Providing a safe and supportive school environment is our number one priority. One of the ways we do this is by regularly reviewing and updating our school crisis management and emergency preparedness plans. Plans include how to respond to a variety of incidents such as fires, severe weather events, and other emergencies. It is critical to have safety drills each year so that our students and staff remember what to do if there is an emergency.

Virginia Law also requires schools to complete two lockdown drills a year, one within the first twenty days of the school session, and to notify parents/caregivers at least 24 hours in advance. We are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of scenario training.

We will conduct a lockdown drill at Poplar Tree tomorrow February 28. All students will participate in this drill.

Additional information including parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this information, it would be helpful to have a talk with your child about safety and school procedures.

Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe.

Sincerely,

Sue Andujar - Principal

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

Our Principal's Message this week is brought to you by the Principal and Assistant Principal of the day! 6th grader Cecelia Sierra and 3rd grader Zoya Nanji were the winners of this in last year's PTA auction! If you would like your child to have this same opportunity, be sure to look for it at this year's auction!

We had an amazing time being Principal and Assistant Principal of the day! We got to see all the inner workings of the school such as the boiler room, storage room, and more! It was such a delight  to visit some of the classrooms, to observe students learning and participating in class. It was fun when we monitored recess and lunch because we got to help so many students. We also loved reading to the Kindergarten and First Graders. At dismissal, we helped preschoolers get to their buses.  Poplar Tree is truly an amazing place to be!

Yours truly,

Principal Cecelia Sierra

The PTA board transitions over late spring in preparation for the next school year. We are looking for 3 PTA members to serve on the nominating committee to help identify candidates for next year’s board.

Why should you consider supporting PTES/PTA in this role?

  • Do you know members of the Poplar Tree ES community who you would trust to lead all of the great programs the PTA supports for the students and teachers?
  • Have you previously served on a board or a committee, but don't have the time for a long-term leadership role right now?
  • The committee will specifically look to recommend candidates for President, President-elect, 6 VP positions, Treasurer and Secretary.

You can help ensure the continued success of the PTA by volunteering for this committee with a minimal time commitment. No previous PTA leadership experience is necessary

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

We have officially begun the third quarter of the school year! The third quarter is a time for growth and building upon the foundation we've established in the first half of the year. We'll be diving deeper into the curriculum, exploring new concepts, and continuing to foster a love of learning in all our students! We're very grateful for the hard work and dedication of our staff who truly show up each and every day to ensure our students learning experiences are amazing!

Each quarter, our houses are working towards earning pink and purple tickets. They earn these tickets when they show that they are being Ethical and Global citizens in our hallways, cafeteria, and classrooms. The house that gets the MOST purple tickets gets a fun incentive at the end of the quarter. Today the YELLOW house celebrated earning the most purple tickets by having SNOW much fun! We had a snow themed photo booth, snow themed brain breaks, a snowflake making station, and snow picture coloring. We're excited to see which house wins the next incentive during third quarter!

We hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

This week's schedule might have been different than usual, but we were still able to maintain our sense of community and held our House Closing Circles! These events are a quick 20 minute gathering at the end of the day with each house where we greet each other, do a fun activity, share some news, and highlight students who have been Ethical & Global Citizens! The Yellow House met Tuesday, Blue House Thursday, Green House Friday, and the Red House will meet Monday! Ask your child about the expectations for assembly behavior!

We wanted to bring your attention to a new section of our Poplar Tree website that highlights the "Top Ten things about Poplar Tree!" Check it out HERE! We had fun identifying some things that truly make Poplar Tree a special and unique place to learn and grow!

Next week the quarter ends on Tuesday, and therefore Wednesday, January 29 is a teacher workday - no school for students!

We hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

💻Encouraging Digital Citizenship

In this ever changing digital world, we would like to emphasize the importance of teaching our students to be digital citizens. Doing this is a shared responsibility between the school and home! You can learn more about FCPS policy on this shared responsibility HERE!

In addition, we wanted to make sure you knew about ways in which you can help monitor what students are doing on their school devices.

  1. Sign up to receive Lightspeed Parent Reports sent to you each week. Click HERE to learn more!
  2. If your child is bringing home their school device home, you can check their history. See the image below for how to do this!

If you have any questions about technology use at Poplar Tree, please reach out to our School Based Technology Specialist, Leslie Leisey at [email protected].

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

It was so great to have our students back for our first full week of school in 2025! We look forward to lots of great things happening in our school this year, including house morning meetings and closing circles, supporting an inclusive learning environment for all, PTA sponsored after school programs, and concerts galore from our talented musicians!

We just want to remind you about our cell phone policy. Keeping cell phones off during the school day helps students focus and learn. It also boosts positive social behavior. Review FCPS’ cell phone expectations by grade level with your child and help keep our classrooms free of distractions!

All students at Poplar Tree should follow these expectations:

  • Phones must be silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day. Cell phones may be used on campus before and after school only.
  • Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.
  • Students are prohibited from using phones, tablets, and other mobile devices in restrooms and locker rooms, unless there is a medical necessity or emergency.

If you need to reach your child during the school day, please call Poplar Tree's Main Office at (703) 633-7400. Do not call or text your students during the school day.

As a reminder there is no school on Monday, January 20 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We look forward to seeing all our Panthers back here at school on Tuesday!
