📈 Testing Results💻 Screening Assessment Reports Available in SIS ParentVUE

  • VALLSS and Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP) reports for kindergarteners will be available by Friday, November 15, and for pre-K students by Friday, December 6

Visit FCPS’ website for additional information about student tests at each grade level, including what each test is for and when each test takes place. Caregivers may follow up with their children’s teachers for more information about how they use test results to support student success.

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

We want to express our sincerest gratitude to all our Veterans for their selfless service and sacrifices. Today, our school community came together for a special Veterans Day assembly to honor these brave individuals.

The assembly was filled with patriotic songs, Veteran speakers, and poetry readings. Our students had the opportunity to learn more about what it means to be a Veteran and watch a slideshow of many of the Veterans related to our Poplar Tree community.

Thank you to all our Veterans and guests that were able to attend and help make this event truly special! We are incredibly grateful to all our Veterans for their dedication to our country!

As a reminder, Monday, November 11 is Veterans Day and there is no school. We hope you take some time on Monday to thank a Veteran!

Enjoy the long weekend!

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

We cannot believe we have made it to the end of the first quarter of school! All of our students should be so proud of all the hard work they have put in each and every day. We've seen our students grow as Creative & Critical Thinkers and look forward to continuing to focus on this Portrait of a Graduate attribute during the remainder of the school year!

We wish a fun Diwali to all celebrating! Diwali is a festival of lights and one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs & some Buddhists. The festival represents the symbolic victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil.

This week we also recognize those in our community observing All Saints Day and Día de los Muertos. For Catholics, All Saints Day (November 1) celebrates all those who are with God in Heaven, known and unknown. All Souls Day (November 2), known in Mexico and Latin America as Día de los Muertos, is a day of remembrance and prayer for all those who have died, especially for the souls who may be in purgatory. These special days are celebrated by Catholics, Anglicans, and some Protestants throughout the world.

As a reminder there is no school for students on Friday, November 1, Monday, November 4, and Tuesday, November 5! We look forward to having our students back in the building on Wednesday, November 6!

Have an awesome weekend!

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

It was another fun week at Poplar Tree! When we walk into classrooms we see students collaborating, engaged in their learning, and using their critical and creative thinking skills across all subject areas! Poplar Tree really is a great place to be!

May all in our Jewish community observing Yom Kippur have an easy and meaningful fast. According to Jewish tradition, Yom Kippur is when God decides each person’s fate, so Jews are encouraged to make amends and ask forgiveness for sins committed during the past year. Tonight, October 11, is an evening-only observance day of Yom Kippur. While we have school today, there are no important events after school this evening.

This Monday, October 14 is a student holiday and staff development day for Indigenous Peoples' Day. Indigenous Peoples' Day honors the histories, cultures, and contributions of Native peoples, past and present.

We hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Sue Andujar, Principal

Amy Alley, Assistant Principal

❤️ SEL Screener: Grades 3-6

FCPS is committed to supporting the mental wellness of all students. The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener provides our students with the opportunity to share their perspective on how their school and community supports them and helps them develop the skills they need to succeed. The screener is offered to all students in grades 3 through 12 in the fall and spring. It addresses skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community is at making them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to plan programming for the division, schools, and individual students.

PTES Students in grades 3-6 will take the SEL Screener during the fall window between October 9-31. After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families without a ParentVUE account. Families who wish to opt their students out of the SEL Screener can do so via the Parent Digital Consent System OR by completing the Fairfax County Social Emotional Learning Screener Opt-Out Request Form.

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

Shanah tovah to our Jewish community celebrating Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year! Meaning “head of the year,” Rosh Hashanah is one of Judaism’s holiest days and marks the beginning of the Days of Awe, a 10-day period of introspection that ends with Yom Kippur.

🔒 Lockdown Drill Conducted Today🔒

GovDelivery2 months ago

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Every school in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan in place. Keeping students and staff safe is a priority. We practice a number of safety drills throughout the school year, including lockdown drills which helps us know what to do if there is a potentially violent intruder inside the school or on school property.

Today, our school conducted a lockdown drill and teachers talked to students to prepare them for the drill.

We are very proud of our students today. They listened to directions and the drill was conducted in a calm and orderly fashion. Our students did a great job, and we encourage you to discuss the drill with them.  Additional guidance on discussions with your child about lockdown drills can be found in the Parent/Guardian tip letter, as well as on the frequently asked questions (FAQs) page.

Our emergency preparedness plans have been developed in coordination with the FCPS Office of Safety and Security, local law enforcement, emergency management officials, and FCPS mental health professionals. The plans are regularly reviewed and updated and include procedures on how to respond to critical incidents such as fires, tornadoes, and other events. Students and staff regularly practice safety drills.

I will continue to keep you informed of safety and security measures in place at our school. If you have questions, please call or contact the school office.  I appreciate your continued support in these matters.

Sincerely,

Sue Andujar - Principal

Amy Alley - Assistant Principal

🔒 Lockdown Drill Information 🔒

GovDelivery2 months ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Providing a safe and supportive school environment is our number one priority. One of the ways we do this is by regularly reviewing and updating our school crisis management and emergency preparedness plans. Plans include how to respond to a variety of incidents such as fires, severe weather events, and other emergencies. It is critical to have safety drills each year so that our students and staff remember what to do if there is an emergency.

Virginia Law also requires schools to complete two lockdown drills a year, one within the first twenty days of the school session, and to notify parents/caregivers at least 24 hours in advance. We are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of scenario training.

We will conduct a lockdown drill at Poplar Tree tomorrow September 12. Our pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students are not required to participate in lockdown drills during the first 60 days of the school year. They will participate in our second and final drill later this school year.

Additional information including parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this information, it would be helpful to have a talk with your child about safety and school procedures. Below are some tips that can help frame your conversation:

  • Ask your child what they know about the drill, and how they feel about it.
  • Avoid scary and/or graphic details from the media.
  • Discuss that practicing how to be safe in a variety of situations is important because it helps to give them the confidence and knowledge to be safe.
  • Let them know it is okay to have feelings about the drill and that you and adults at their school are there to help them be safe and listen if they would like to talk more.

There will be school mental health staff available to help students with concerns around the lockdown drill. If you have questions, please reach out to us.

Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe.

Sincerely,

Sue Andujar - Principal

Amy Alley - Assistant Principal
