In addition, this week, we had the Power of our Words lessons in grades 3 & 6. The students had great discussions in the classrooms. This is the first step in our journey and we look forward to continuing this work in the upcoming school year!

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

What a wonderful Teacher Appreciation Week we had this week! We want to express our deepest gratitude for the outpouring of support shown to our incredible faculty and staff. The past week has been a heartwarming display of the strong bond that unites our school community.

From the heartfelt student artwork and handwritten notes to the delicious treats and thoughtful gift baskets, your efforts truly touched the hearts of our teachers. It was evident in the smiles on their faces and the appreciation in their voices how much your gestures meant.

Your recognition of their dedication, passion, and tireless commitment to our students is invaluable. Teachers play a vital role in shaping young minds and fostering a love of learning. Knowing that their efforts are appreciated fuels their passion and motivates them to continue creating a nurturing and enriching environment for our children.

Thank you, parents, students, and staff, for making Teacher Appreciation Week such a success. Together, we are building a strong foundation for our future generation.

Have a wonderful weekend!

❤️Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener Results Coming Soon!

Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of March, providing parents and teachers with their current perspective on SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail. For more information about the screener please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s school.

  iReady Assessments

Students in Grades 1-6 will be taking the iReady assessments in the coming weeks. The purpose of iReady assessments is to identify students who may have gaps in foundational literacy and mathematics skills. iReady tests are also used to measure student progress in reading and mathematics skills.

Additional information can be found at the iReady Universal Screener webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/us). If you have further questions about these assessments, please contact your student’s teacher or one of our school test coordinators Amy Alley, avalley@fcps.edu or Leslie Leisey, [email protected].

Thank you to all who came to the Power of our Words lesson preview last night! We look forward to sharing these lessons with our students in the upcoming weeks. We will also be forming a parent work group to help develop a parent work shop this fall. Stay tuned for a sign up for this!

Thank you also to those who came to our PTA meeting. We are so lucky to have such a supportive PTA and community!

We want to extend our warmest wishes to all our families who observe Passover and Theravada New Year!

Passover, a joyous holiday in Judaism, commemorates freedom and liberation. It's a time for families to gather, reflect, and share traditions.

Theravada New Year, a vibrant celebration in many Southeast Asian countries, marks the beginning of a new year based on the lunar calendar. It's a time for renewal, good deeds, and spending time with loved ones.

We celebrate the diversity within our school community and recognize the importance of these significant holidays. May both Passover and Theravada New Year bring you and your families joy, peace, and treasured moments together.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

We want to extend warm wishes to all those who celebrated Eid al-Fitr. We hope your your Eid was filled with joy, peace, and togetherness with loved ones.

This week we were able to meet with each colored house for a closing circle! It was fun to have all the classes in each house together, meeting and greeting each other, and sharing the ways our students have been Ethical & Global Citizens!

Being an Ethical & Global Citizen is one of 5 Portrait of a Graduate attributes that FCPS hopes for all students to have by the time they graduate from high school. The other attributes include Communicator, Collaborator, Critical & Creative Thinker, and Goal Directed and Resilient Individual. FCPS is celebrating 10 years of Portrait of a Graduate and even came to Poplar Tree to record some of our students talking about it! We are very proud of the work that our school does around Portrait of a Graduate and are excited that FCPS recognizes this work at Poplar Tree! You can see the video by clicking the image below!

Have a wonderful weekend!

☀️ Solar Eclipse Information ☀️

GovDelivery1 month 1 week ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

☀️ Total Solar Eclipse on April 8 ☀️

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04PM and end around 4:32PM, with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20PM.

Maintaining our priority on safety, Poplar Tree will not be sending students outside to view the eclipse. Students and staff will be provided with the NASA livestream link as an option to safely observe the eclipse.

There will be some overlap of the expected window and Poplar Tree dismissal. To help with student safety we will be following our rain dismissal plan for kiss and ride, so kiss and ride students will be dismissed from the cafeteria that day. Students will be reminded to not stare at the sun, and we ask that parents remind their children that it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing.

FCPS has a page that shares information about Solar Eclipses at https://www.fcps.edu/solar-eclipse

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

Thank you to all our students and families who participated in or came to see the amazing performances for the Talent Show! There was dancing, singing, playing of musical instruments, 2 special Chinese Yo-Yo acts, and more!  A huge THANK YOU to the PTA members who volunteered their time to make the Talent Show a success!

We are so grateful at Poplar Tree to have such a diverse group of student learners! We strive to truly make every student feel like they belong. This is evident in many ways, including our Adapted PE classes where our multi-age students gain access to physical education activities that are just right for them. Check out this video highlighting some of our students enjoying some of these activities this week!

Another THANK YOU to our PTA for purchasing equipment so that our staff can create these engaging opportunities for all learners!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sue Andujar, Principal

Amy Alley, Assistant Principal

💡Uniquely YOU Spotlight 💡

As we are helping ensure everyone at Poplar Tree has the opportunity to celebrate their uniqueness, we also want to highlight what makes our staff members unique! This week's spotlight is on two of our multi-age teachers, Ms. Sheehy & Ms. Venkatanarayanan.

*

Think about it...what makes YOU Uniquely YOU!?

✅ Student Attendance🏫

Student attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers are teaching, and students are learning. Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind.

Family trips taken during school days will be counted as “Unexcused Absences.” Excessive absences can additionally hurt our school’s accreditation status with the Virginia Department of Education. Most importantly, it creates a very difficult learning gap in a student’s education both academically and socially for all the days that are missed.

We ask that families do their best to schedule your trips during school breaks. The next school break is Spring Break which is March 25-29. Spring Break is followed by two teacher workdays (student holidays) on Monday, April 1 and Tuesday, April .

Please reach out to our school counselors Beth Mertens ([email protected]) or Stephanie Girellini ([email protected]) if you have any attendance concerns. You can also visit this website for attendance resources.

Let’s work together to make sure your student(s) are in school and excited to finish the year strong!   🏫 Kindergarten Registration 🏫 We are so excited for our littlest Panthers to join our school for the 2024-2025 school year!

It's time to register your child for Kindergarten! To do this, fill out the forms linked HERE. Then, please contact our School Information Assistant (SIA), Claudia Guitjens-Munson ([email protected]) to schedule an appointment!

🔠 Kindergarten Orientation 🖐🏼

Our future Panthers and their families are invited to come meet our Kindergarten teachers, see our Kindergarten classrooms, and learn more about our school community!

  • When: Tuesday, April 2, 2024
  • Time: 2:00 - 3:00 pm

Students will go to classrooms with the teachers, hear a story in the library, and take a tour of a bus, while guardians will meet in the cafeteria for a presentation!

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

As many of you know, Ramadan, the holy month of fasting and reflection for Muslims, began this week. During this time, our Muslim students, families, and staff members will be observing traditions that center around prayer, charity, and community.

Here at Poplar Tree, we strive to foster a respectful and inclusive environment. We can support our Muslim community members during Ramadan by:

  • Being understanding: Some students observing Ramadan may experience changes in energy levels or require adjustments to their schedules.
  • Celebrating the spirit: We can encourage acts of kindness and generosity throughout the school, reflecting the spirit of Ramadan.

Wishing all those celebrating Ramadan a peaceful and blessed month.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sue Andujar, Principal

Amy Alley, Assistant Principal

💡Uniquely YOU Spotlight 💡

As we are helping ensure everyone at Poplar Tree has the opportunity to celebrate their uniqueness, we also want to highlight what makes our staff members unique! This week's spotlight is our other ESOL teacher - Patty Chambers.

🥫SCA Food Drive 🥫

The SCA is running a food drive through 3/22 to help support our community. All donations will be donated to a local food pantry. There's a bin in the lobby to place any canned goods or non-perishables. If you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Sniffin ([email protected]).

📚 SCA Little Free Library 📚

We love seeing all of the use that the Little Free Library gets, however, we noticed it's running low on books. If you have any books that you're looking to donate, please feel free to add them directly to the shelves or coordinate a drop off time with Mrs. Sniffin ([email protected]).

Thank you for your continued support of our community!

  💻 VGA Results 💻

Families of students in grades 3-6 who participated in the Winter VGA, will soon be receiving VGA results in the mail.

  • The Winter VGA primarily assessed reading/math standards for the current year.
  • This is different from Fall VGAs, which primarily assessed content from the previous year.
  • Therefore, the score from the Fall cannot be compared to the Winter.

The VGA is just one of many data points school staff collect throughout the school year. School staff use VGA results together with other available data to create a more complete picture of your student’s academic performance.

If you have any questions about your students’ progress, please reach out to your child’s teacher.

💕 Spring SEL Screener 💕

The Spring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3-6 between Feb. 26 and March 14 on a day selected by each classroom teacher. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener also helps them evaluate how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. More information is available about the SEL Screener at THIS LINK.

If you have any questions please reach out to our SEL Screener Lead, Beth Mertens, at mailto:[email protected]. Thank you!
